Worker's Comp:
Fey Fouls Up

Last month, the New York State Workers Compensation Board filed a $79,000 judgment against actress/comedian Tina Fey for failing to carry workers comp insurance between 2012 and this year.

Fey's camp is insisting that she carried WC insurance that whole time and the judgment is because of a bill being sent to an incorrect address.

No matter which side wins, it's safe to say that this is the first and last time the phrase "workers compensation" has appeared on TMZ.

Hiring Issues in 2014, by the Numbers

We recently saw this video on the official website of the book The Talent Equation. According to the book, collecting and analyzing data can help companies solve a lot of these issues. But if you don't have the time to learn all about big data, a top staffing company can help you solve these issues, too.

February 2014 Legal Roundup
Winter storms, minimum wage, distressed babies and NFL cheerleaders, all in one place!

We did it again! Reliance has made the Best of Staffing list for the third year in a row. Less than 2% of the staffing firms in North America make either list, let alone both, and we're the only independent staffing firm in Hampton Roads to be on either list! For more info, read here.

Safety Tip of the Month: Eye Protection
Wishes he had worn eye protection
Last month, we looked at how to protect our ears; this month, the eyes have it. First, the bad news: about 2,000 people injure their eyes at work each day, and one in 10 injuries requires one or more missed workdays. Now the good news: using the correct safety processes and eye protection could lessen the severity or even prevent 90% of eye injuries.

What are those safety processes?

  • Create a safe work environment: Minimize hazards from falling or unstable debris. Make sure that tools work and safety features (such as machine guards) are in place. Make sure that workers (especially volunteers) know how to use tools properly. And keep bystanders out of the hazard area.
  • Evaluate safety hazards: Identify the primary hazards at your work site. Also note any hazards posed by nearby workers, large machinery and falling or shifting debris. Like the first item on this list, this is part of a good general safety practice.
  • Wear the proper eye and face protection: OSHA has an entire publication about the specs for eye protection for thousands of jobs with the catchy name of ANSI Z87.1; let this be your guide to what eye gear to wear. Also, make sure that the eye protection is in good condition, that it fits the user properly and that it will stay in place.
  • Guard against dirt: Before you remove the eye protection, brush, shake or vacuum dust and debris from the area north of your shoulders. Clean your eyewear regularly. And no matter how much they itch, don't rub your eyes with dirty hands or clothing.
  • Be prepared: Preparation for eye injuries is an important part of first aid. Have an eye wash station or sterile solution on hand, and make sure everyone knows how to use it. Check the station or replace the sterile solution at least once a year.

Eyes are one of the most important body parts to protect, because they're so irreplaceable. Work has started on a bionic eye, but we're still a long way away from Steve Austin territory.

Client Comments

"I recently conducted a job in the Suffolk area that required using your service to provide manpower for a rework process. The first morning, when Stephanie Lamb and Katie Brooks [from Reliance's Suffolk office] walked in with the 13 staff we had ordered I was very impressed with the professionalism and enthusiasm of both employees. During the 2+ weeks of 24-hour staffing, I increased the amount of contracted personnel exclusively from your company because of Katie and Stephanie's over-the-top customer service. It didn't matter if it was the weekend or weekday, they answered every challenge I presented. Stephanie even answered my panicked call at 4:30am Sunday morning. That's customer service!

I have utilized staffing agencies all over the country and I have never had service as good as your company provided."
