Accruals while on workers comp leave

Q. Are employees on workers' compensation leave entitled to sick and vacation accruals or retirement fund contributions?

A. Employers aren't required to continue sick and vacation leave accruals or to continue to make contributions to the employee's retirement fund, providing that they don't do so for other similarly-situated employees on non-workers' compensation disability leave (i.e., employees on leave for injuries not related to work).

It's a good idea to include information such as this in your employee handbook, as such details as vacation accrual might not come up in the immediate aftermath of an injury or claim.

Best in Staffing 2013: We Made Both Lists!
We're so proud! Reliance Staffing & Recruiting has been named to Inavero's 2013 Best of Staffing™ lists, for both client service and service to associates.

Reliance is the only local independent staffing firm to make either list, let alone both. Last year, we entered the Best of Staffing Client competition and made the list, so this year we decided to enter both competitions, and got a Yahtzee!

Safety Tips of the Month: Fire Safety
When you smell something burning and you know it's not popcorn in the microwave, panic can set in. And panic can lead to catastrophe, especially in a fire.

To minimize the risk of fire and the risk of loss if a fire does break out, consider these tips:
  • Have a fire plan in place for your workplace, and make sure everyone at every level understand it fully. Don't forget to make it part of your new-hire training.
  • Know where all the fire extinguishers are throughout your workplace and know how to use them.
  • The occasional fire drill can help employees keep escape routes, meeting spots and procedures in mind. Think of the 10-minute disruption as an investment against chaos and possible loss of life in an emergency.
  • Wherever you can, avoid plug-in power strips. (You're probably glancing over at one right now.) They're easy to overuse and if too many electronic devices are plugged in to one, sparks and a fire can result.
  • Keep cleaning and other work-related chemicals in a well-ventilated room. Many chemicals release highly flammable vapors that can be set off with something as small as a spark from a faulty wire (possibly from that power strip you were looking at).
  • Remember that dousing a grease fire with water is the absolutely wrong thing to do. You know how oil and water don't mix? Water will simply splash around the oil that's the fuel source to the fire, spreading the fire even further.
