Version Control - The Key to Creating Quality Documents
This is probably the single most significant safeguard in the development of your document. Poor version control leads to errors that waste hours of your time.

Save Time - While Spending It
MySpeed is a utility that speeds up and slows down videos without losing audio quality. If you watch training (or other) videos, this inexpensive product will quickly pay for itself.
October Holidays
(well, sort of)
October is Adopt a Shelter Dog Month - A great excuse to introduce you to the newest member of our staff - see the article at the right.
Oct 3
- Techies Day (Thank your favorite techie - chocolates, wine, kisses, whatever works for you! And yes, you can consider us techies if you like!)
Oct 6 - Mad Hatter Day (We love wearing funky hats.)
Oct 14 - Be Bald and Free Day (I'm thinking it ought to be closer to Mad Hatter Day.)
Oct 22 - National Pumpkin Cheesecake Day (OK, we'll have to celebrate!)
Oct 30
- National Candy Corn Day (No thanks, we'll pass on that one.)
For  the Pronunciation Cops Among Us
Check out this video about acceptable variant pronunciations for common words. Yes, "nucular" is acceptable. Phil's glad; Sandy loses a bet (and cringes).
DDP Alpha Channel...Alpha channel is a graphics and music term. We'd like to think it's also a communications term. While we know you get your news many places, we hope we'll be one of your alpha channels for all things desktop publishing. Enjoy!
Using Images in Microsoft® Word

We did a two-part blog series about working with images in Word. The blogs are chock full of info.

The first is about inserting images in Word. The settings you define when you place images into Word determine how they will print - in low resolution or suitable for quality printing. Never changed the settings? That's probably why your graphics aren't the quality you're looking for (or your desktop publisher is looking for when you send them to him or her). The second blog is about how to extract those images from Word so that they are usable in InDesign documents. The best approach is to have the original artwork to place in InDesign, but that's not always possible. So here's two methods for getting images out of Word. (Yes, you can copy and paste, but that is the absolute worst method and isn't one of our two recommendations.)
The Basics of Setting Up a Website

"How do I start a new website?"
is a question we're often asked. While creating websites is a very small part of our business, we're happy to help others get new sites on the Web. Phil recently sent a long email to someone outlining all the basics of setting up a new website from scratch. We then turned it into a blog that addresses the issues of web hosting, URLs, platforms, themes and more. Check out the blog here.>>
Highlights from our Facebook Page
DDP Facebook Cover Aug2013

Data Designs Publishing has a Facebook page where we post short items that don't make it into a blog. Here's some of what you've missed if you haven't checked our Facebook page or "Liked" us:

  • DealNews.com reports that 63% of all digital music downloads are purchased thru iTunes, even though they are less expensive on Amazon a whopping 78% of the time. Shop and compare! Check out Amazon's music department.
  • Adobe reached the milestone of one million users in the Cloud. Read about it here in Adobe's blog.
  • Cool time-lapse photo - each strip is one pixel in width and captures the same scene each day for a year. See winter turn to spring to summer, to fall and back to winter all in one image.
We hope you'll take a minute to check out and "Like" our Facebook page.
Meet Jasper T. Hovatter
Jasper T. Hovatter
Meet the newest member of the Data Designs Publishing staff. Jasper T. Hovatter is our official Morale Officer. He was found on the side of the road by a friend about a month ago. He had a collar that said "One year old. Has all shots. Needs a good home." When we went to check him out, Phil took one look and said "What a majestic dog!" We routinely get stopped by strangers who tell us what a beautiful dog he is. He has one blue eye and one that's mostly brown, and he doesn't shed as much as you'd think he would. We're thankful for that!

Jasper is a real "people person" who doesn't like being left alone. He can't carry the title "Chief of Security" like our previous dogs have because Jasper loves everybody and is very gentle. He's a big hit at nursing homes, too.
Thanks for reading our e-newsletter. If you experience any glitches, please let us know.

If you have a tip you'd like to share, let us know that, too. If we use it in a newsletter, we'll be happy to give you full credit for it.
