West End Students Meet Legislators

On March 27th, the Education and Employment Department took two student representatives (Marcus Neil and Monique Evans) to the annual Delaware Department of Education's "Meet and Greet" luncheon.

The students and staff spoke with state representatives and senators at Legislative Hall in Dover. Marcus gave a short speech to the legislators highlighting the importance of Adult Education in his life.

$tand by Me Success

West End's $tand By Me program helps people become self-sufficient every day - just ask Vanity Sanders. She began working with a financial coach through the program a few years ago and as a result is now doing her own taxes, saving regularly and - thanks to West End's Security Deposit Loan Program - living in her own apartment.

According to Vanity: "Many people have the resources to be successful, but don't know how to apply them. $tand By Me coaches show you how by putting you in control of your own success."
Preparing for Spring

On Saturday, March 22nd, 15 students from the University of Delaware's Honors Program volunteered to help West End catch up on landscaping projects that had been delayed due to this year's severe winter weather. Now we're ready for a strong growing season! To see more pictures, check out our Facebook page.
Volunteer Spotlight

Blaise Muscara first connected with West End in 2010
to tutor for our GED program, helping students understand more than just the basics of essay composition. "The most important thing that I do for students," he says, "is get them to understand how important it is to properly represent themselves. There will always be a time when they are in front of a decision maker, and if they present themselves well, they are more likely to hear 'yes' instead of 'no.'"What drives him to volunteer? Del State Volunteers

A huge thank you to the 30 students and faculty members from Delaware State University who volunteered with West End all day on Saturday, March 29th as a part of DSU's Inspired Day of Service!

They worked hard to clean our youth wing, organize our supplies closet, and design and create a mural to promote Wilmington Community Project Day at our entrance.  More than 200 students from DSU volunteered at sites throughout the state that day.
Urban Agriculture
In 2013, West End's Urban Agriculture program expanded to the  Herman Holloway campus in New Castle. There, the program recently broke ground on a two-acre garden and is growing over 20,000 plants, cultivating material for ten community gardens in the city of Wilmington, and has secured a contract for landscape planting. The Urban Agriculture program includes six Horticulture students as well as six additional other greenhouse workers.
Survey of Tilton Park

Recently, under the instruction of J.W. Haupt, Vice President of Pennoni Associates, the University of Delaware's Engineers Without Borders program teamed up with West Side Grows Together to spend two days surveying Tilton Park in Wilmington.

Once completed, this survey will provide a baseline plan of the park's topography and existing features. It will also aid in determining future options for park renovation. Click here to learn more about Tilton Park and future plans for improvement.
