After hangin' around on the banks of France's Loire last week, we began to notice that our passports were getting a bit restless, and so we're off to Italy! Over the course of the next week, we have a thoroughly Italian itinerary to explore. Tonight (Thursday, the 28th) our Central Italian class will cover Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, Abruzzo, and Lazio. Following that, we've arranged for an adventurous tasting of Italy's southern specialties on Saturday and a few northern highlights next Tuesday. Read on for details!
Indy's Best of
the Triangle!
Friends, Trianglites, countrymen, you can now vote for your favorite finalists (including a certain passionate bastion of estate-produced wine) by clicking on the Indy's "Best Of" image above! Keep in mind that there are many people out there who may cast votes for the unwieldy, unimaginative chains. Our area's many exciting local businesses depend on your loyalty, selectivity, and vociferous support, so be true to your civic duty and vote for the little guys who make our community special. It truly makes a difference!
~~~~ Vote for your favorite Durham businesses! Only two days left!
The polls are open for a mere two more days at Durham Magazine's website. Head on over and give some sugar to the local enterprises that brighten your Durham days!
Italy's South: "Put the foot in your mouth"
Normally, putting your foot in your mouth is something to be regretted (or, better yet, avoided), but when it comes to the wines of Italy's foot-shaped south, we've absolutely no hesitation! Join us this Saturday as we embark on a tasty journey to Basilicata, Puglia, and Campania for affable and affordable examples of the regions' specialties - some familiar, others strikingly exotic. Primitivo, Aglianico, Fiano, Greco, and a host of seldom encountered white grapes provide us with an ensemble cast. The fun continues at next week's Tasty Tuesday, where we explore Italy's luscious hips... Grazie!
I Pastini
Locorotondo Bianco 2014 "Antico"
35% Alsessano, 5% Minutolo
(Puglia, Italy)
ZESTY LEMON & PINEAPPLE, ZIPPY MINERAL, DELICATE HERBS Welcome to your new favorite white wine! Who'd have thought that you could make 12% alcohol, snappy white wine like this in Italy's way far south? Hailing from halfway down the heel of the boot on the Adriatic coast of Puglia, this bright...
Antonio Caggiano
Irpinia Bianco 2014 "FiaGre"
70% Fiano, 30% Greco (Campania, Italy)
DRIED TURKISH APRICOT & WISPY ACACIA, PEAR, WAXY PISTACHIO Two quintessentially Campagnese grapes, Fiano and Greco, are not only among the most important grapes of Italy's shin-shaped eno-paradise, they're also responsible for some of the the country's most striking whites. Previously reputed to be of Greek origin, these ancient and exotically perfumed varietals can...
D'Angelo
Aglianico 2013 "Sacravite"
100% Aglianico
(Basilicata, Italy)
GENEROUS BERRY, SMOKY MINERAL, RUSTIC LEATHER In the northern reaches of Basilicata, at the base of the extinct volcano, Monte Vulture, D'Angelo produces distinctive, definitive Aglianico. Not content to be simply "old world" in style, this wine is perhaps "ancient world." Darkly intriguing and terroir-driven, the "Sacravite," will slowly draw you into its clutches with aromas of graphite, dried black fruits, and cordovan...
Primitivo Salento 2014 "Mezzanotte"
{biodynamic}100% Primitivo (Zin)
BRAMBLY BLACK RASPBERRY & CHERRY, MOCHA & MINT Produced biodynamically with love and a defiantly quality-over-quantity approach, the "Mezzanotte" is one of Lisa Gilbee's profoundly Puglian offerings of Primitivo. An Australian native, she settled in Italy just over two decades ago and, after working as a winemaker both there and abroad, began Morella in 2004, naming the estate for her Italian husband. She's fallen in love with the local...
