Third Thursday?
Today!
BeaujolaisAllTheWay
  "Est arrivé," as they say...
The time has come to once again embrace the wine world's eternal symbol of youth and renewal. Every year on the third Thursday of November, the arrival of Beaujolais Nouveau celebrates the completion of (virtually all) grape harvests throughout Europe. In fact, it tends to be the first commercially available wine of the year from anywhere in the Northern Hemisphere. Vive la France! Vive la Beaujolais!
Just as we do every year, this time we'll only be selling artisan Beaujolais Nouveau from small, family-owned estates. You'll find none of that artificial tasting stuff that they hawk in grocery stores and big box stores. These are truly delicious, and truly a revelation if you've never had the good stuff before.

Our 2015 Nouveau selections:
  • Jean-Paul Brun - Beaujolais Nouveau "L'Ancien" Terres Dorees 2015  $16.99
  • Domaine Vissoux (Pierre-Marie Chermette) - Beaujolais Primeur "Pierre Chermette" 2015  $14.99
  • Domaine Vissoux (Pierre-Marie Chermette) - Beaujolais Primeur Vieilles Vignes 2015  $15.99
  • Domaine Vissoux (Pierre-Marie Chermette) - Beaujolais Primeur Rosé "Les Griottes" 2015  $14.99

We talk Turkey!

  and that ain't no jive...
The writing is on the wall (along with a bit of the stuffing).  Thanksgiving is a mere week away, and it provides us with memorable encounters with family and friends as well as opportunities for adventurous wine pairings with zany foods that we've somehow decided should be served together!
In typical Wine Authorities fashion, we've cobbled together (gobbled together?) a convenient display for each store which highlights our tip-top tipple for Turkey Day! Scroll down to theSaturday Tasting's section of the email to see which four that we're sampling this week. This year's Thanksgiving treasure trove includes:
  • Alexander Gysler - Riesling Trocken "Sandstein"  2014  $16.99
  • Baileyana - Pinot Noir "Firepeak Cuvée"2013 $22.99
  • Domaine Magellan - "Le Fruit Défendu" Cinsault Rouge2014  $11.99
  • Meinklang - Pinot Noir Rosé Frizzante "Prosa"2014  $16.99
  • Mas Codina - Penedès Blanc 2014  $9.99
  • Cave Freudenreich - Alsace Gewurztraminer 2012  $18.99
  • Domaine des Grandes Bruyeres - Beaujolais-Villages - Vieilles Vignes "Prestige"2014  $17.99
  • Quinta de Sant'Ana- Pinot Noir 2013  $18.99
P.S.(!)Psst - For outlandishly grand wines for cobblers and other tangy, fruit-based desserts, consider two new arrivals from the Loire Valley's Coteaux du Layon
courtesy of Domaine Cady. Supplies are limited!

Coteaux du Layon & Coteaux du Layon "Cuvée Volupté"

$15.99 & $45.99 (500 ml)
Also ideal for
Thanksgiving:

This week, just in time for Thanksgiving, Kate Elia debuts her new venture, Growers and Cooks! She is introducing the first two products from a growing line of stocks made from fresh ingredients, pastured meat, and sustainable vegetables. Genuine stocks like these are an essential, wholesome kitchen staple that, until now, took many hours of work at home to produce. The alternative has long been the industrial and artificial output of the factory "food" system. Stocks are the key ingredients for many of the dishes that we eat on Thanksgiving, and Kate's authentic offerings will enhance your feast and are a cinch to use! Come by to say hello, take a taste and learn how you can use Growers and Cooks to complete your holiday menu!

Real Customer Comment:
"...the staff are incredibly approachable and knowledgeable. If you want to know what wine to serve with something like asparagus soup (tricky!), they will be ready with recommendations. If you want to have a very technical conversation about biodynamic wine from the Loire Valley, they are ready. If you want to talk casually and don't know what you're talking about, they can roll with that, too."

Whether or not your Thanksgiving is poised to revolve around the goliath guest of honor that Benjamin Franklin envisioned as our national mascot, we have the perfect wines for the feast.  With all of the odd and sometimes mismatched dishes that we've somehow agreed should be served together, versatility becomes the key.

Remember! Also, at our Durham store Tuesday from 5-7pm, we welcome W.A. veteran, Kate Elia (aka "The Notorious D.O.C.G.") and her fresh cooking stocks from her exiting new startup, Growers and Cooks!    Fall has arrived in earnest, and we can hardly find our footing for the crunchy, multicolored leaves covering the ground. To celebrate the advent of oyster season, crisp autumnal aromas, and Thanksgiving feasts, we've prepared a care package of fall favorites to share with you! There's a mineralistically razory bubbly from the land of Muscadet (indispensable for oyster aficionados), a lushly perfumed yet beautifully balanced Viognier, a feast-friendly rosé from southern Portugal, a pair of turkey-lovin' reds (crisp Dolcetto & juicy Syrah), and a comfortingly spicy Portuguese powerhouse for chilly nights. Let's have three (or, in this case, six) cheers for autumn!

THE DAY OF THE TURKEY

IS UPON US! (well, in one week)
Turkeys are a huge deal this time of year. We find ourselves increasingly surrounded by the bird behemoths, and they're not alone. Each November, we're privy to mounting reports of every conceivable manner of casserole and yams which have been diabolically transformed! Is there anything we can do to prepare for the madness!? As a matter-of-fact, there is.
Analyzing the perils of Thanksgivings past and scanning the horizon for further anomalies, we've perfected an arsenal of secret weapons - wines which tackle the threat of difficult, fourth Thursday pairings head on. These bold, balanced whites and reds have what it takes to stand up to the cornucopia of festive aberration that is the "traditional Thanksgiving spread." See further documentation below...
