Thanksgiving
Selections 2015

Dry turkey? All it needs is the right wine!*
The writing is on the wall (along with a bit of the stuffing).  Thanksgiving is a mere two weeks away, and it provides us with memorable encounters with family and friends as well as opportunities for adventurous wine pairings with zany foods that we've somehow decided should be served together! In typical Wine Authorities fashion, we've cobbled together (gobbled together?) a convenient display for each store which highlights our tip-top tipple for Turkey Day! This year's Thanksgiving treasure trove includes:
  • Alexander Gysler - Riesling Trocken "Sandstein"  2014  $16.99
  • Baileyana - Pinot Noir "Firepeak Cuvée"2013 $22.99
  • Domaine Magellan - "Le Fruit Défendu" Cinsault Rouge2014  $11.99
  • Meinklang - Pinot Noir Rosé Frizzante "Prosa"2014  $16.99
  • Mas Codina - Penedès Blanc 2014  $9.99
  • Cave Freudenreich - Alsace Gewurztraminer 2012  $18.99
  • Domaine Robert Sérol - Cote Roannaise "Les Originelles"2014  $14.99
  • Quinta de Sant'Ana- Pinot Noir 2013  $18.99
*And gravy.

P.S. Sample this year's selections at our next
two free Saturday tastings!

P.P.S.(!)Psst - For outlandishly grand wines for cobblers and other tangy, fruit-based desserts, consider two new arrivals from the Loire Valley's Coteaux du Layon
courtesy of Domaine Cady. Supplies are limited!

Tonight!
Domaine La Ligière:
Tasting w/ special guest

Wine Authorities Raleigh
5:00 - 7:00pm
Tonight at our Raleigh store! Earlier this year in the south of France, we were lucky enough discover the wines of Philippe Bernard. The wines were so damn good that I was nearly moved to tears. Three months later we were thrilled to unwrap a most Mediterranean care package containing a slew of new wines from Philippe's Domaine La Ligière. These beautiful, bold, biodynamic and organic wines had never before been available in our neck of the woods. Those first customers who bought them on our rave recommendations were blown away and nearly bought out that first shipment.
Prior to picking up the family torch and taking over the estate in 2008, Philippe was a rugby player, and while some of his reds (from the Vacqueyras and Gigondas appellations) are certainly broad-shouldered, muscular masterpieces, he's definitely deft at extending a most delicate touch to his wines while using only naturally occurring yeasts and maintaining a profound reverence for nature. Expect vibrant rosé, orange blossom-scented dry Muscat, and three prime specimens of Philippe's intensely-perfumed reds! With wine this amazing, La Ligiere will soon be the talk of Rhone fans around the world.
More selections from Philippe are on the way. Help us extend a warm welcome to him this evening in Raleigh!

Fall has arrived in earnest, and we can hardly find our footing for the crunchy, multicolored leaves covering the ground. To celebrate the advent of oyster season, crisp autumnal aromas, and Thanksgiving feasts, we've prepared a care package of fall favorites to share with you! There's a mineralistically razory bubbly from the land of Muscadet (indispensable for oyster aficionados), a lushly perfumed yet beautifully balanced Viognier, a feast-friendly rosé from southern Portugal, a pair of turkey-lovin' reds (crisp Dolcetto & juicy Syrah), and a comfortingly spicy Portuguese powerhouse for chilly nights. Let's have three (or, in this case, six) cheers for autumn!

Tasty Tuesday:
"Sake to me"
This Tuesday, November 17th, we present our FREE
midweek wine tasting! Every Tuesday is tasty...

5:00 - 7:00 pm
Join us at our next Tasty Tuesday as we visit the Land of the Rising Sun and the raised sake glass! We'll have three of our favorite choices queued up for sensational sampling. Perhaps following in the footsteps of other misunderstood delights like dry rosé and Riesling, sake has had the misfortune of being introduced to many of us through decidedly unspectacular, industrially-produced examples. Join us on Tuesday evening as we take a samurai-sized leap toward setting things right and rediscovering Japan's signature drink. Kanpai!

Join us this Saturday for part one of our "Thanksgiving Selections" tastings. Thanksgiving celebrations are, by design, tests of endurance and indulgence, and they're so much the better when paired with the right wines. This year, we've selected an ensemble of returning holiday champions and exciting new arrivals (don't worry, they get along splendidly!) to accompany you to the imminent feasting festivities. This line-up has its sights honed on classic Thanksgiving fare but will readily rise to the occasion of more unusual and adventurous meals. Join us this Saturday to taste!

Meinklang
Pinot Noir Rosé Frizzante 2014
"Prosa"
{biodynamic} 100% Pinot Noir
(Burgenland, Austria)
CRISP, DRY & LIGHTLY SPARKLING. CUSTOMER FAVORITE!
Werner and Angela first produced this rosé for their wedding. The marriage is still going strong and the wine is regularly produced in small quantities. Their farm is a true biodynamic universe. One of the most memorable wines of the estate, the rosé's lush fruit, slight effervescence and full mouth-feel is the perfect way to start a meal or afternoon...

Alexander Gysler
Riesling Trocken 2014
"Sandstein"
{biodynamic} 100% Riesling
(Rheinhessen, Germany)
LIME & APRICOT, PRONOUNCED MINERALITY, CHISELED & SEXY
"Sandstein," unsurprisingly refers to the sandstone vineyard site that the vines responsible for this cuvée call home. If judging a book by its cover is a bad idea, then choosing a wine by its label is similarly unwise. Yet here is a wine whose label actually does speak volumes aesthetically. Alexander Gysler proudly "strives for less," and the...

Cote Roannaise 2014
"Les Originelles"
{sustainable} 100% Gamay
(Southern Loire, France)
BRAMBLY RASPBERRY & BLACKBERRY, AROMATIC, JUICY
Wow this is Gamay to rave about! Robert Serol is a benchmark producer in the Cote Roannaise region. The estate has vines aging from five to eighty years old. All of his wines are 100% Gamay and each reflects the terroir of the vineyards. Les Originelles is the sort of wine we wish we could...

FRAGRANT BLACK CHERRY & RASPBERRY, TOASTY OAK
Grand Firepeak Cuvée is the name used for the top wines coming from Baileyana. Over twenty years ago, Catherine Niven founded Baileyana and is known for her 7 words: "Be the best you can be in whatever you pursue." This Pinot vineyard area is located just inland of the cool Morro Bay and Edna...
