While it's indisputably still August in NC and certainly more sweltering than balmy, haven't there been a few milder days recently? Isn't there the faintest kiss of fall in the air? Well, whether or not you want to chalk it up to wishful thinking, the idea of a softer side of summer seems very real with the autumnal equinox scarcely a month away. Of course, as soon as the temperature drops, we'll begin pining for summer once again. The grass, ahem... vines, are always greener on the other side! That's just the way it goes... At our next two tastings, we'll venture to cooler climates and the gentle, green hills of France's Burgundy and New York's Finger Lakes, where we'll encounter racy, vibrant whites, medium bodied reds that perfectly populate the soothing warmth of this final leg of summer, and a brilliant rosé from Beaujolais that reminds us that there's still plenty of sun to soak up before the season ends. At this week's free Saturday Tasting, we're delightedly wading into the waters of weekly Burgundies - new vintages and new arrivals that rise to the challenge of perfectly representing the famous (and usually pricey) region on an unprecedentedly gentle budget. These wines come from up yonder (in the Yonne department, next to Chablis), the far south (Mâconnais & Beaujolais) and central Burgundy's Cote Chalonnaise.
