Vault of Vaucluse pt.2
Vacation in Vacqueyras w/ Ligière
Following last week's celebration of cycling and bold Mediterranean wines, we return to the same neighborhood of France - the department known as the Vaucluse. This southeastern corner of the Rhone Valley brushes up against Provence, and it's especially appropriate that it should be the subject of Saturday's tasting as the Tour's cyclists are scheduled to enter the Rhone Valley the following evening. Thankfully, we also have a slew of new wines from the department courtesy of Domaine La Ligière, whose beautiful, biodynamic and organic wines have never before been available in our stretch of the United States. Expect vibrant rosé, dry Muscat, and two prime specimens of intensely-perfumed, voluptuous Vacqueyras!
Domaine La Ligière
{organic} 100% Carignan
(Southern Rhone, France)
JUICY RASPBERRY & LEMON ZEST, FIRM & HYPER-REFRESHING Carignan, with its reputation for robust rusticity, is probably not the grape that you'd immediately suspect upon tasting this vibrantly berryish, lean, clean, and by no means mean rosé from the northwestern fringe of the Provençal countryside. As eloquently balanced and dry as this wine is, we can't help but think of it as the adult equivalent of a raspberry-lemon push pop...
Domaine La Ligière
{organic} 100% Muscat
(Southern Rhone, France)
APRICOT & PINEAPPLE, PLUMP SULTANA, DRY WITH VIBRANT ACIDITY Muscat Blanc à Petits Grains is an ancient pan-Mediterranean grape with no shortage of clout in this corner of the Southern Rhone (home to the fortified wine specialist subregion, Beaumes-de-Vinise). It's long been typecast as a grape whose undeniable potential for decadence and dessert should be pursued to the absolute fullest. Taking a totally different tact with this cuvée, Ligière follows a decidedly non-dessert, dry route here and employs the fiercely...
{biodynamic}70% Grenache,
20% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre
(Southern Rhone, France)
VIOLETS, INKY FRUIT CONFITURE, LAVENDER & THYME, DATES Preserving the preponderance of "P"s in winemaker Philippe's name, this Vacqueyras provides palpable, palate-pleasing profundity! Perhaps it persists with his preservation of place through biodynamic preparations. Presumably it prevails because of his partner's positive posturing. Regardless, this rouge opens with a wallop of violet blossoms before releasing the signature aroma of ripe strawberries and then finishes with a savory blend of grilled thyme and dried dates...
{biodynamic} 80% Grenache,
(Southern Rhone, France)
BLACK CHERRY & RASPBERRY, DARK ROAST COFFEE, SUPPLE The Southern Rhone has a lovely way of oscillating around Grenache - particularly gnarly, old Grenache vines. We like to think of these vines as accessing a kind of underground pipeline, extracting ancient secrets, winding deeper into the sandy-clay soils of the Vacqueyras region they call home. The vines in this particular plot predate the naming of Vacqueyras as an AOC, the winemaker, and even the estate itself...
