We're immersing ourselves in May in the very best way and diving headlong into the spirit of the spritz. Nothing in the world of wine packs quite the refreshing punch of zesty, vibrant, effervescent vino. With Mother's Day celebrations and Graduation parties happening with increasing frequency over the next week, bubbles occupy an important part of early May's wine-scape. Join us for a Txakolifest preview tasting at both our shops this Saturday and a vibrant, pink, celebration-friendly tasting of bubbly and effervescent wines next Tuesday (starring the ever-popular Txakolina Rosé from Amestoi). Cheers! Wednesday, June 17th
We're very excited to announce the upcoming wine dinner focusing on Austria's Meinklang estate of Burgenland at Raleigh's extraordinary and unique Garland restaurant. It's here at long last! The pink oasis that refreshes our mouths and nourishes our souls is once again in bloom! The Rosé Garden has arrived, and we're kicking off the season with selections that include the Garden's starring darling, "Venus," which has just returned in both bottle and glorious 3-LITER BOX! We're also happy to feature a brand new pink offering from the fan-favorite Austrian producer, Paul D. Holy Txakoli!!!
It's the one day of the year that Durham breaks out its secret stash of porrons and is transformed into an unlikely sister city to San Sebastián - complete with spritzy Basque wine, oysters, and pintxos (tapas). This is one of the greatest celebrations in town, and it's become the largest festival of Txakoli in the United States! Wine Authorities's Grand Poobah will be on hand through the afternoon and evening sessions as the event's professor of Txakolina! He'll describe the grapes & regions responsible for Txakoli, demonstrate how to use a porron, and answer all your Txako-riffic questions.
First Session
Noon to 3:00 PM
The first session is a tasting and food extravaganza as well as a fundraiser for Urban Ministries of Durham. This session is a rare opportunity to wine and dine decadently and features all you can eat and drink (!) including:

- 3 different oysters on the half shell
- 3 different Estrella beers
- "Amazingly crazy" Basque sidra (cider)!
- Lots of fantastic food from favorite local chefs
- Souvenir glass for you to take home
Six Plates will be joined by Watts Grocery, Gocciolina, Pizzeria Toro, Blu Seafood, Bar Mateo, Vin Rouge, Toast, G2B, and Juju. The folks from Firsthand foods will also be here to tell you about all the fantastic things they are doing to help our fantastic farms get to our tables.

This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
"try before you buy" at
our FREE tasting
In rapt anticipation for next week's annual Txakolifest celebration at Six Plates (Saturday, May 16th), we've arranged for a beautiful line up of gorgeous Txakolinas from each of the three zones of production (Getaria, Biscay, and Álava) to wet your whistle and whet your appetite for the famously spritzy Basque wines. Join us this Saturday as we sling samples of three crystal-crisp whites and an ambitiously aromatic red made from Hondarribi Beltza, a close relative of Cabernet Franc. Prepare to pass the porron (pictured below) and hone your skills for Txakolifest!
Amestoi
90% Hondarribi Zuri,
10% Hondarribi Betza
(Pays Basque, Spain)
SPRITZY & SLATEY, LIME & GRANNY SMITH, HERBACEOUS This seventh generation estate is considered one of the top producers of Txakoli (CHOCK-oh-lee), the spritzy, tart, low-alcohol wine that is perfect with seafood tapas. Ignacio Ameztoi Aranguran is the latest generation to continue making this traditional wine that most resembles the "lovechild" of Chablis and Vinho Verde...
Xarmant
{sustainable} 80% Hondarribi Zuri, 10% Hondarribi Zuri Zerratia, 5% Izkiriota, 5% Izkiriota Ttippia (Pays Basque, Spain)
LIGHTLY SPRITZY & TART, BOLD & DYNAMIC, MOUTHWATERING Arabako Txakolina (AKA Txakoli de Alava) is the most southerly, furthest inland, and least moist subregion of the three enclaves in Spain's Basque Country that make up Txakoli country. This lean white is refreshingly sharp by itself and positively tremendous with salty, savory food such as...
Doniene Gorrondona
85% Hondarribi Zuri, 3% Hondarribi Beltza and 12% Mune Mahatsa
(Pays Basque, Spain)
TART KIWI & GREEN APPLE, DRY & RAZORY, FLINTY MINERAL Taking it's name from the Bay of Biscay, the Bizkaiko zone of Txakolina production brings us, perhaps, the most diversity stylistically. This example has only the faintest touch of the spritz that Txakoli is famous for while retaining the insanely pronounced minerality and refreshing, tangy fruit. Robustly flavorful and chiseled in structure, this delicate white subtly layers aromas...
PERFUMY & HERBACEOUS, BLACK PLUM, SILKY & BRIGHT From 150 year-old Hondarribi Beltza vines grown in the tiny Aldape vineyard farmed by Gorrondona, this is an extremely rare, obscure wine that is totally delicious, food-versatile, ageworthy, and distinct. If you are a fan of the grape's close relative, Cabernet Franc, or simply a fan of good food and wine, you...
