Is that a fish on your back?
Most of us likely noticed (some of us the hard way) that yesterday was April Fool's Day. We'd like to take a moment to remind all of our customers to try and check themselves for errant fish - particularly if they've been in the company of French children. In France, April first is "celebrated" by attaching a fish (made of paper, mercifully) to the backs of unsuspecting friends and strangers. While arguably less problematic than a "kick me" sign, the unexpected presence of a fish, real or otherwise, on one's back can potentially lead to existential crises. Treat with wine...
~~~~ Montinore Visit!
@ W.A. Raleigh only
Join us this afternoon (Thursday, April 2nd) at our Raleigh shop as Oregon's Montinore swoops in from the Willamette Valley to share its excellent wines with us yet again. The estate's Tom Champine will talk about what makes these wines and Oregon's climate special! We can't wait to see you there!
Kosher for Passover!
Two delicious, estate-produced Kosher for Passover wines have arrived from Israel's Barkan Vineyards. The wines from the estate's Ed Salzberg (pictured above) have exemplified quality, value, and great varietal character, making them our most trusted and most often returned to Passover selections year after year. Chag Sameach!
- Barkan - Chardonnay "Classic" 2014 $14.99
- Barkan - Cabernet Sauvignon"Classic" 2013 14.99
This Tuesday, April 7th, we present our FREE midweek wine tasting! Every Tuesday is tasty...
Join us at our next Tasty Tuesday as we unveil three new arrivals from the west coast - two in the form of new vintages and one entirely new selection to our shop. From California's Lodi and Peirano Estate Vineyards, we have not only a fantastic new vintage (and lower price - $11.99) for the Mediterranean-turned-Cali specialty, Petite Sirah, but we're also officially introducing the estate's "Immortal" Zinfandel! Indeed, it does have serious staying power and a timeless appeal, confidently living up to its name. From Washington's Columbia Valley and Barnard Griffin, we have one of our first 2014 rosés to arrive, the colorful and sumptuously-textured Rosé of Sangiovese. West Side!
And don't forget:
Our Tasty Tuesday 15% Half-Case Discount!
After you taste, put together 6 bottles from our Tasty Tuesday lineup, and we'll take an entire 15% off!
This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
"try before you buy" at
our FREE tasting
This weekend, perhaps in the name of peaceful solitude or maybe due to a subconscious yearning to be where the water is clear and gentle swaying palms provide the perfect amount of shade, we're off in search of islands. There are numerous wine-producing islands the world over. From Long Island to Sardinia to both halves of New Zealand, our planet is practically an archipelago of wine producers! This weekend, we'll explore a few islands of wine both literal and figurative. Beginning in Europe's best represented wine-producing island, Sicily, we'll start on an appropriately tropical note with an example of the bright whites made from the native Insolia grape. Next, we'll journey to that landlocked island of sorts which is Burgundy's Chablis. Our third wine hails from the former peninsula (now island courtesy of a canal) that is Greece's Peloponnesus, and it's a spring-friendly red with gentle tannin and plenty of fruit. We'll reach our last stop in Chile's Colchagua, where we'll encounter a Carmenere from an island vineyard between two coastal rivers. How's that for a three hour tour?
Tenuta Ibidini
100% Insolia
(Sicily, Italy)
PASSION FRUIT & GENTLE LEMON, LIGHTLY FLORAL AROMAS, MOST REFRESHING Gaetana Jacono is a sixth-generation winemaker, and the Tenuta Ibidini line of wines is named for the estate where some of her family's oldest vineyards are located. The Insolia grape is conducive to bright, tropical, aromatic wines with a quality of fresh almonds, citrus, and floral aromas. Planted primarily...
Gautheron
100% Chardonnay (Northern Burgundy, France)
CLASSIC! LEMON & MINERAL, HIGH ACID, SALINE HINT If you could look up the taste of a traditional Chablis in the dictionary, this would be it! But, too few classic Chablis wines are imported at reasonable prices because: A) They think Americans only want Chablis that tastes like California Chardonnay. B) The great values are consumed in France. C) There's not much Chablis made, and the demand is so high. Here is a rarity for us, and we think you'll really enjoy it....
Skouras
90% Aghiorgitiko (Saint George), 10% Cabernet Sauvignon
(Peloponnese, Greece)
POMEGRANATE, CHERRY & PEPPER, TANGY George Skouras, owner and winemaker, is from Argos on the Peloponnese island, but studied winemaking in Dijon, France where Burgundy was his passion. After working there and in Italy, George returned to Peloponnese in 1986 to start his estate. He created a blend called Megas Oenos...
DEEP RED FRUIT, PEPPER & MOCHA, DUSTING OF CLOVE & ROSEMARY Vina Maquis is essentially an island perched on a stretch of land between the Colchagua Valley's Tinguirira River and Chimbarongo Creek. The two parallel waterways bring cool coastal breezes and allow the grapes to maintain healthy, balancing acidity while they ripen. While this example from...
