Greetings!
Walking in a Winter Wonderland*
So, all things considered, it's fair to say that last year's local "Snowmageddon" (pictured above) had a bit more pizazz than what we've experienced so far this year. This week's stranded automobiles (and ensuing explosions) have been kept to a minimum, and we've so far seen neither hair nor hide of the enormous yeti-like beasts that tore through our fair Triangle last year. What, no one else remembers that!? In any case, we're not complaining and hope that everyone who was trapped indoors had plenty of wine to help them stay warm and plenty of power to help power stuff. Cheers!

This Saturday, Emmanuel Rybinski of Clos Troteligotte will be returning (after almost precisely a year since his previous visit) to share some of his extraordinary wines from Cahors, the region that gave the world Malbec. Read more in our Saturday Tasting section below...

Cahors: Birthplace of Malbec
feat. Clos Troteligotte
(The estate's Emmanuel Rybinski will be pouring at our Durham store. The wines, themselves, will be sampled at both locations!)
This Saturday at our free tasting, we welcome the wines of a most dedicated and forward-thinking ambassador of Malbec's origins. Southwestern France's Cahors is a beautiful and imposing medieval city, and the countryside which surrounds it is the original stomping ground of the majestic Malbec (originally known as Ct). Clos Troteligotte has become one of this landscape's stars, and the estate's Emmanuel Rybinski (better known as Manu) is visiting us once again to pour four of his always-impressive wines and share with us his penchant for clever puns revolving around the letter, "K." We'll begin somewhat unexpectedly with an adventurous white made from Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, and Viognier, which is both very vibrant and strikingly aromatic. Next, a pair of his famously structured, minerally Malbec cuves (the "Knom" and the "K-or" - grown organically and vinified without oak aging) will be showcased. These will be followed by a gorgeous cuve of microlot Malbec, the sumptuous, barrel aged "K." Go Ct!
Clos Troteligotte
{organic} 50% Chardonnay, 30% Sauvignon Blanc, 20% Viognier
(Cahors, Southwest France)
BRIGHT & TROPICAL, TOAST, REFRESHING & SUMPTUOUS Emmanuel Rybinski is a veritable maestro of Malbec. With this cuve, however, he turns his sights toward a trio of France's most distinguished white grapes, each finding itself a long way from home in Rybinski's Sud-Ouestern vineyards. The result is vibrant and unique - filled with bold tropical fruit, balancing acidity, and a kiss of toasty...
Clos Troteligotte
{organic} 85% Malbec, 15% Merlot (Cahors, Southwest France)
PLUM & BLACKBERRY, LIGHT SMOKE & MINERAL, FIRM TANNIN Emmanuel Rybinski is a relatively recent graduate of oenology school, yet his experience in winemaking has taken him from France to Australia to California to learn about varied winemaking techniques around the world. Returning to Southwest France's Cahors, he turns out fantastic Malbec-based wines. Taking over...
Clos Troteligotte
{organic} 100% Malbec (Cahors, Southwest France)
BLACKBERRY, PEPPER & ANISEED, A TOUCH OF COCOA Emmanuel Rybinski knows that great wine is made on the vine, and he devotes most of his time to carefully farming his small vineyard (which of course makes us at Wine Authorities get all swoony). Debudding and judicious pruning means that his Malbec bunches have plenty of room to grow healthy and ripe, qualities...
Clos Troteligotte
{organic} 100% Malbec (Cahors, Southwest France)
FIRM BLACK PLUM, TOASTED OAK, DARK MINERALITY Somewhat nebulous in name yet undeniably focused in personality, Emmanuel Rybinski's "K" reveals its deliciously dark aura from the very first sip. This very contemporary representative of the famous "Black Wine" of Cahors is indeed very black in both flavor and appearance. Opaque in the glass, it's...
