Winter (and Holiday Cheer) is Coming!
Is it Winter that tiptoes in on little cat feet? Or is that the fog? Either way, all of a sudden the last traces of color have left the trees and winter is most definitely on its way. It's a very Game of Thrones type of feeling, except in place of an army of ice ghouls, we have the warmth and comfort of the holiday season. So join our Wine Authorities family for a month of wine-slingin' holiday cheer! We are in the process of building our Holiday Display, and we'll be featuring a cheery slew of seasonal tastings and events over the next few weeks... Oh, and if you are looking for something fun and exciting to do on this very night, we still have a few spots left for our first ever Rhone Class! See below for details.

Our Newest Wine Class: "The Rhone Less Traveled"

7:33 PM @ Wine Authorities Durham
Join us tonight at our Durham location as we unveil our newest intermediate wine class - this one dedicated to the Rhone Valley and its wealth of bold, spicy reds and exotic, aromatic whites. We'll follow the Rhone river itself from its Glacial Swiss beginnings through Lake Geneva and into the French Alps before reaching the viticultural promised lands that we know collectively as "The Rhone Valley." Learn about its history, its appellations, and what differentiates the "Northern Rhone" from the "Southern Rhone" (as well as what, other than the river itself, ties them together). What separates a Cotes-du-Rhone from a Chateauneuf-du-Pape? What's the difference between an Hermitage and a Crozes-Hermitage? Why are all the names hyphenated? Uncover the origins of the Rhone's dynamic grape varietals and drink...er...taste some outstanding examples of the region's phenomenal wines. Vive le Rhone!

"Mature & Masterful"

Great Gift Wines Aging Gracefully
Holiday gifts are ephemeral. What seems shiny and new in the firelit glow of the season is often just another thing come February. It's important to strike the balance between instant gratification and enduring appreciation. Wines are often the same way, which is why they make such great gifts. There's the initial excitement of receiving a great bottle, the anticipation of popping the cork, and the afterglow of pleasure when the last drop is gone. A gift of wine is the gift of a singular experience. Which is why we're presenting four magnificent wines for your tasting (and gifting) pleasure this Saturday. Each has been allowed to mature to a point of blissful perfection. Expect surprises from Burgundy, Provence, Navarra, and the Piemonte. Cheers!
Domaine Tripoz
Cremant de Bourgogne
{biodynamic} 100% Chardonnay
(Southern Burgundy, France)
NUTTY MATURITY, GOLDEN APPLE & PEAR, BRIGHT ACIDITY, VERY FINE MOUSSE This micro-production cremant is crafted like many of the finest grower Champagnes, and it shows. Rich, mature, and elegantly vinous, it is perfectly at home at the table, and not to be delegated merely to celebrations. Lush and rich, this is great sparkling wine that happens to be biodynamic...
{organic} Syrah, Mourvedre, Cabernet (Provence, France)
DRIED BERRIES, SUBTLE SPICES, PRETTY & FIRM Alain de Welle is a kind, peaceful man. As the owner and manager of Pinchinat, it's his vision that is expressed in each glass of his wine that is served these days. Although his family has farmed this vineyard for over two centuries (and the land farmed back to pre-history), his father broke from tradition and raised him in the nearby city of Aix...
Navarra Tinto 2001 "Vendimia Seleccionada"
70% Tempranillo, 30% Cabernet (Navarra, Spain) RICH & POWERFUL, AGED TO PERFECTION. A MODERNIST MASTERPIECE. While Viña Aliaga is not a winery that pushes the envelope in the modernist, hyper-rich style, they will flirt with it to the point of seduction if the vintage merits. In 2001 they had a small parcel of grapes with perfect ripeness and balance...
Moscato Passito 2004 "Carlottin" [375 ml]
100% Moscato
(Piemonte, Italy)
CANDIED ORANGE PEEL & APRICOT, SWEET & MUSKY The Moscato grapes in this lusciously complex dessert wines are covered and left in dry, windy places around the property to gradually wither and raisin up. The sugar ratio goes through the roof and the grapes take on natural musk, so we end up with silky sweet and intensely flavored passito that seems to float over the tongue...
