The real deal is upon us, finally! We're too old (probably) to gorge ourselves on candy until we slip into a fitful, sugary sleep, but we're not above cracking open a bottle of great wine and cueing up a horror movie or two. How about some Gmörk to go along with Gmork? Or a mildly bloody Marcillac to accompany our ol' buddy Dracula? Either way, it's going to be a deliciously spooky evening. Happy Halloween!

Fall's Southern Bounty at Duke Gardens
with Chef Matt Kelly of
Mateo & Vin Rouge! Wednesday, November 5th @ 6:00 PM

Durham's culinary scene really arrived in the summer of 2012 when Chef Matt Kelly opened his eponymous Spainish-by-way-of-NC outpost, Mateo. When those first orders of almejas and morcilla hit the tables, it was impossible to ignore the sound of thousands of taste buds exploding with happiness. We love Matt and his hearty, wholesome food, so we are thrilled that he is co-hosting the latest in our series of Duke Gardens Dinners.
The Food: Fall's Southern Bounty... think collards and sweet potatoes, the season's first turnips, slow-smoked chicken, and pimento cheese, all graced by Matt's skill to turn the traditional into the sublime.
The Wine: We'll showcase our estate wine selections from wineries that grow all of their own grapes. Simply put: the estate wine producers are as much farmers as they are winemakers. A trip to Wine Authorities always means learning something new about the wines you enjoy.
The Setting: Sarah P. Duke Gardens, voted one of the top ten public gardens in the United States by Trip Advisor and awarded the 2013 Horticulture Magazine Award for Garden Excellence. This intimate dinner will be served family-style and outdoors in the Garden (weather permitting) with a communal table to foster conversations as we savor amazing food and luscious wines.
Wednesday, Nov. 5, 6 pm @ Sarah P. Duke Gardens:
420 Anderson St, Durham, NC 27708
Fee: $100 $80 for Gardens Members & Wine Authorities Customers - Just mention that you subscribe to our weekly newsletter! Participant limit: 40
Pre-registration required at 919-668-1707

Tasty Tuesday!
"One does not simply walk into New Zealand..."
This Tuesday, November 4th, we present our FREE midweek wine tasting. Every Tuesday is tasty!
It's true! New Zealand is entirely inaccessible by foot. That isn't going to stop us, however, from overcoming incredible odds in order to explore (and, more importantly, to taste) the southerly archipelago's delicious and distinctive contributions to the world of wine! Join us as we hit up Marlborough for its signature Sauvignon Blanc as well as its magnificently Mosel-esque Riesling before turning our sights to the neighboring Nelson for a snazzily snappy Pinot Noir brimming with firm red fruit and flinty mineral.
And don't forget:
Our Tasty Tuesday 15% Half-Case Discount!
After you taste, put together 6 bottles from our Tasty Tuesday lineup, and we'll take an entire 15% off!

"try before you buy" at
our FREE tasting
Having (presumably) survived yet another year's most menacingly phantasmagoric evening, we land happily on the first Saturday of November ready to share some truly saintly selections. Yes, it's All Saints' Day, and there's no shortage of saints in the world of wine! The are regions such as Bordeaux's Saint-Emilion, Saint-Estephe, and Saint-Julien. There are grapes like Austria's Sankt Laurent and Greece's Agiorgitiko (aka. St. George). This Saturday, however, we'll bypass these more famous saints in favor of hidden gems of exceptional value from outstanding producers with saintly names as well as an exceptionally powerful red from one of the many exceptional but underrecognized corners of the Languedoc, Saint-Chinian. They're all saints!
Tenuta Sant'Antonio
"Scaia" Bianco 2013
50% Garganega, 30% Chardonnay, 20% Trebbiano di Soave/Verdicchio
(Verona, Italy)
PASSIONFRUIT, PINK GRAPEFRUIT, LEMONGRASS Exotic in its perfume and mouth-filling fruit, this intense white is equal parts refreshing cocktail wine and provocative head turner. Between the loving care of the brothers Castagnedi and the unusually fine powdery granite soil (nicknamed "parmigiano" by the locals), an impressively expressive wash of tangy orange citrus and concentrated tropicality has been coaxed from the typically more restrained Garganega and...
Domaine du Pas Saint-Martin
Saumur Blanc 2013
{organic} 100% Chenin Blanc (Middle Loire, France)
VERY DRY, LIME, HONEY AROMA & CHALKY MINERALS This is another case of the latest generation in an old family estate taking the reigns where his grandfather left off, when his father went into another business. Laurent Charnier now runs this organic estate among hillsides with troglodyte caves carved out of the same tufa soil that his chenin...
Lisboa Tinto 2012 "Cigarra"
Camarate, Castelâo, Tinta Miúda, Touriga Nacional (Lisboa, Portugal) JUICY RED BERRY & PLUM, SPICY, FRESH & SUPPLE A four-varietal blend showcasing the fresh, juicy appeal of the Camarate and Castelâo grapes, the Cigarra layers comforting dimensions of ripe fruit with spicy aromatic appeal, maintaining a lovely affability without compromising the rich dried berry flavors and mouth filling concentration that we've come to rely on from great Portuguese values. Santos Lima is a continuously operated sixth generation estate which prides itself on its affinity for the many stellar (albeit sometimes internationally obscure) indigenous varietals of Portugal...
Saint-Chinian 2012 "Les Terres Blanches"
{Organic} 45% Grenache,
45% Syrah, 10% Mourvedre
(Central Languedoc, France)
DARK RASPBERRIES, VERY RIPE, GARRIGUE. PURPLE & FIRM Nestled amongst the garrigue within a pine forest, the few acres of Borie la Vitarele's old vines are treated like a private garden employing biodynamic compost made from local plants. Hand-harvesting ensures quality and the wine is aged for 12 months in French oak. Dark purple in color, with great freshness and aromas of raspberries, thyme and lavender. The generous aromas with...
