Happy Birthday!
(May we say that to ourselves?)
As we prepare to turn seven next Wednesday, September 10th, we're feeling enormous gratitude to all of the loyal friends and customers in the Triangle and beyond who've unfailingly shown us support as we've grown older and quite possibly wiser! We've bonded with you over our shared thirst for wine and passion for the delicious silver lining which lies beyond industrialized corporate wineries.
The past year has been one of the most exciting for us as we've sprouted new buds, opening our second store in an awesome Raleigh neighborhood of which we couldn't be more proud to be a part! What better way to celebrate than with a hefty birthday sale? Next week, starting on Monday (the 8th) and ending on Sunday (the 14th), we're offering a robust 20% discount on every purchase of 6 or more Wine Authorities Selections™ and a 25% discount on every purchase of 12 or moreWine Authorities Selections™! These are some of our very favorite wines - ones which we've invited to the Triangle, bringing them exclusively to our shops! It's like a birthday discount for everyone, and you can take advantage of it as often as you like over the course of the seven-day sale. There's only one catch, you'll need to give us the ultra-secret, ultra-special hand signal at checkout in order to congratulate us on our seven years of existence: Seriously, you have to give us the signal... Join us for a game of
Hopscotch?
For the aurally alert among you, it should be fairly clear that we here at Wine Authorities are rabid music fans. We're always kicking out the tasty jams and filling the shop with only the crunchiest of grooves. So it is with a kid-on-Christmas sense of joy that we anticipate this coming weekend, the greatest musical weekend in the history of the world. It's Hopscotch Time! And now that we have a wonderful Raleigh location, we get to be right in the thick of the festival and participate like we never have before. On Saturday, September 6th, we will help our awesome neighbors Person Street Bar throw one of Hopscotch's legendary (and totally free) Day Parties. The Person Street Plaza parking lot will be rocking starting at 2pm with live music provided by Petey, The Shelles, Cousins, and Loose Canyons. We'll be pouring beer on tap and wine by the glass for the duration, and Yellow Dog Bread will have pastries and Lamplighter Coffee for sale. Our soon to be neighbors Standard Foods are having a lamb roast*, so it's going to be one big happily roiling sea of great food, great wine (and beer), and great music. We're literally vibrating with excitement! For more info check out the Hopscotch website! *Vegetarian Plates also available

ROSÉ LIMERICKS & PINK HAIKU
Every year at about this time, we invite our customers to submit rosé-themed limericks. These are then expertly judged, and prizes are distributed to the most deserving poets. A good laugh is had by all. So, with all appropriate pomp and ceremony, let the 2014 Rosé Limerick Contest begin! (cannons fire, doves are released) BUT WAIT! We have two stores now, so this year we are having TWO CONTESTS. Ladies and gentlemen, it is our great honor to announce the first ever Rosé Haiku Contest. While the limericks are stored in a secret location and judged by a stern and patriarchal panel of adjudicators, the haikus will be judged by you, in what will surely be a breathtaking use of social media. As tech nerds like to say (probably), the haiku contest is "open source". Feel free to submit your work to both contests! Read on for rules, details, and examples. Remember, no matter which format you choose, your muse MUST be dry rosé! ROSÉ LIMERICK CONTEST From Wikipedia: A Limerick is a form of poetry in five-line anapestic meter with a strict AABBA rhyme scheme (no, not the Swedish pop band). Limericks are usually humorous and sometimes obscene. Here's an example: The limerick packs laughs anatomical Into space that is quite economical But the good ones I've seen So seldom are clean And the clean ones so seldom are comical
THE RULES
1. You must be at least 21 to submit an entry. 2. Multiple entries are allowed, but each must be sent in a separate email. 3. Poems MUST BE IN STRICT LIMERICK FORMAT. Only true limericks are eligible to win. 4. Entries must be "clean enough" to print publicly. Please don't say a cussie. 5. All entries are due by Friday, September 12th at midnight. 6. All limericks must have a rosé-based theme. Please email all entries to floatingheads@wineauthorities.com, with LIMERICK as the subject line. A haiku is an ancient Japanese poetic form, usually meant to inspire contemplation of the dignity and solemnity of nature. For our purposes, your haiku should follow a strict format: three lines, the first and third containing five syllables, and the second containing seven syllables. Here's a truly stirring example: As the sun rises My underwear goes with it I have a wedgie
-Andrew Fiore circa 1995
THE RULES
1. You must be at least 21 to submit an entry. 2. Multiple entries are allowed, but each must be sent in a separate email. 3. Poems MUST BE IN STRICT HAIKU FORMAT. Only true haikus are eligible to win. 4. Entries must be "clean enough" to print publicly. Again, please refrain from the invocation of cussies. 5. All entries are due by Friday, September 12th at midnight. 6. Each haiku must have a rosé-based theme. Please Tweet or Instagram your submissions @wineauthorities, and be sure to tag them #rosehaiku2014. You can also post your entries on our Facebook page with the #rosehaiku2014 hashtag. WHAT CAN YOU WIN?
Our panel of celebrity limerick judges will be announced soon. Stay tuned for more info!

The ninth wonder of the world (our beautiful Rosé Garden) continues to bloom in all it's pink, juicy glory. In fact, we have two gardens for the first time this year and a whole new cadre of gardeners to tend our Raleigh Rosé. Old favorites have returned along with the requisite new arrivals, and (as always) we will donate a portion of our rosé sales throughout the year to breast cancer research. So come shop in our magnificent garden. New rosé selections are continuously blooming, and you never know what might surface next!

Tasty Tuesday!
A Toast on the Eve
of Our Birthday
This Tuesday, September 9th, we present our FREE midweek wine tasting. Every Tuesday is tasty!
Join us on Tuesday as we celebrate Wine Authorities' seventh anniversary - our birthday! We're sampling three bubblies which wouldn't be available in our corner of the world if we hadn't loved them enough to bring them here and share them with our customers. First up is the refreshing Cava from Mas Codina that is as precious to us as gold but disappears as quickly as water! Next, we'll venture to France's Alsace for an elegantly piercing sparkler made from Riesling, Pinot Blanc, and Pinot Noir courtesy of Cave Freudenreich. We'll end in Burgundy with what was the very first sparkling Wine Authorities Selection, the Blanc de Blancs Cremant from Domaine Tripoz. Toasting to the exploration and adoration of wines that are made, as is the case with every wine we carry, by the very farmers which grew the grapes, we share these favorites with you. Cheers!
And don't forget:
Our Tasty Tuesday 15% Half-Case Discount!
After you taste, put together 6 bottles from our Tasty Tuesday lineup, and we'll take an entire 15% off!

This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
in Durham & Raleigh
Prepare to enter a mysterious green world at this week's free Saturday tasting, and join us in the midst of the last (and perhaps hottest) leg of this overtly green Triangle summer. We're sampling four phenomenal values - each fantastically green in its own special way. Our first stop is in Basque Country, at the eastern extreme of what is typically referred to as "Green Spain" (stretching from Galicia across Spain's northern, very Atlantic coast). Here, in this most mild and moist part of Spain, we'll find one of our best and only defenses against these 90+ degree North Carolinian days we have at hand. Next, we'll venture westward into the realm of northern Portugal's "Green Wine," Vinho Verde for a great example of one of the nation's many spectacular and virtually exclusive grape varietals, Loureiro. Taking a detour from Northern Iberia, we'll find ourselves at the heart of Europe in the company of Austria's revered green grape, Grüner Veltliner - in this case, by the liter! Our final wine welcomes us back to "Green Spain." At the frontier of Galicia and Castilla y León, where we'll find Bierzo and its impressive but somewhat rare Mencía grape. Get your green on!

Getariako Txakolina

(Pays Basque, Spain)
TRADEMARK TXAKOLICIOUS MINERAL & EFFERVESCENCE Lasalde Elkartea is a big man with giant hands. He comes from a cattle farming family, but left this tradition to follow his love of the zippy Basque wine. Glimmering with green zestiness and bright golden fruit, this phenomenal value in Txakoli layers the signature mineral and blazing acidity that we crave...

Vinho Verde ~ Loureiro 2013 "Pássaros"
100% Loureiro (Minho, Portugal)
BRIGHT GRAPEFRUIT & AROMATIC PEAR, ZINGY ACIDITY Anselmo Mendes has established himself as Portugal's go-to specialist for white wine, and he continues his streak with this superb Vinho Verde. The "Passaros" is unusual in that it is the rare example of a Vinho Verde made from...
Grüner Veltliner 2013 [1 Liter!]
100% Grüner Veltliner (Wagram, Austria) FRESH APPLE, CREAMY MELON, SPRITZY PEPPERCORN On a wine buying trip in Austria, Paul Direder stood before us looking barely old enough to drive. He smiled as we sampled his wine and stood nervously with his mother at his side waiting for a reaction. His first vintage was brilliant. The family farm...

Bierzo 2012
100% Mencía
(Bierzo, Spain)
BLACK CHERRY & EARTHINESS, SMOKY RESTRAINED SPICE Here's a rare value from the "in vogue" Bierzo appellation in North Western Spain. From Mencia vines over 50 years of age, this unoaked little minx is tempting and intriguing. Mencia is known for it's complex spicy aromas...
