ROSÉ LIMERICKS & PINK HAIKU
Every year at about this time, we invite our customers to submit rosé-themed limericks. These are then expertly judged, and prizes are distributed to the most deserving poets. A good laugh is had by all. So, with all appropriate pomp and ceremony, let the 2014 Rosé Limerick Contest begin! (cannons fire, doves are released) BUT WAIT! We have two stores now, so this year we are having TWO CONTESTS. Ladies and gentlemen, it is our great honor to announce the first ever Rosé Haiku Contest. While the limericks are stored in a secret location and judged by a stern and patriarchal panel of adjudicators, the haikus will be judged by you, in what will surely be a breathtaking use of social media. As tech nerds like to say (probably), the haiku contest is "open source". Feel free to submit your work to both contests! Read on for rules, details, and examples. Remember, no matter which format you choose, your muse MUST be dry rosé! ROSÉ LIMERICK CONTEST From Wikipedia: A Limerick is a form of poetry in five-line anapestic meter with a strict AABBA rhyme scheme (no, not the Swedish pop band). Limericks are usually humorous and sometimes obscene. Here's an example: The limerick packs laughs anatomical Into space that is quite economical But the good ones I've seen So seldom are clean And the clean ones so seldom are comical
THE RULES
1. You must be at least 21 to submit an entry. 2. Multiple entries are allowed, but each must be sent in a separate email. 3. Poems MUST BE IN STRICT LIMERICK FORMAT. Only true limericks are eligible to win. 4. Entries must be "clean enough" to print publicly. Please don't say a cussie. 5. All entries are due by Friday, September 12th at midnight. 6. All limericks must have a rosé-based theme. Please email all entries to floatingheads@wineauthorities.com, with LIMERICK as the subject line. A haiku is an ancient Japanese poetic form, usually meant to inspire contemplation of the dignity and solemnity of nature. For our purposes, your haiku should follow a strict format: three lines, the first and third containing five syllables, and the second containing seven syllables. Here's a truly stirring example: As the sun rises My underwear goes with it I have a wedgie
-Andrew Fiore circa 1995

Check out this excellent article on our new Raleigh 'hood in the latest issue of Walter Magazine! They have some great things to say about the new businesses in the area (including ours), and we're very proud to be part of the ongoing radification of such a cool part of town.
We would like to point out that our Durham store has actually been in business since 2007 (not 2009 as mentioned in the article) and to clarify that it is, in reality, a whopping 95% of grocery store wine which is produced by the same eight corporations. These corporations have bought or created brands to make it seem like they are hundreds of individual wineries while manufacturing the wines in massive factories. Dastardly indeed.

This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
in Durham & Raleigh
This Saturday we celebrate this most scholarly "back to school" season with a tasting which features "old school" wines from the old world. We've selected four favorites which are as timeless as they are retro and more relevant than they are relic-ish. We'll begin with a phenomenal value in sparkling wine from Burgundy. Aged to perfection yet boldly bright, it's a tremendous alternative to the much more expensive vintage options from Champagne. Next, we'll find ourselves in Tuscany for a Trebbiano/Malvasia combo whose deep coloration and refreshing pearskin-like astringency are the result of extended skin contact. In northern Portugal's Bairrada, we'll encounter the Baga grape in the excellent company of Touriga Nacional and Tinta Roriz (Tempranillo). Firm and filled with black fruit, this mature red is still plenty assertive with rustic notes of walnut and leather. Our tasting's finale is set to find us is Navarra for a sumptuously oaky Tempranillo/Cabernet blend inching deliciously toward a decade of age. Kick it old school with us, pick your favorites, and have a late-night European evening after you put the kids to bed for their first day back to school!
Domaine Tripoz
Cremant de Bourgogne
{biodynamic} Chardonnay
(Southern Burgundy, France)
NUTTY MATURITY, GOLDEN APPLE, BRIGHT ACIDITY, VERY FINE MOUSSE This micro-production cremant is crafted like many of the finest grower Champagnes, and it shows. Rich, mature, and elegantly vinous, it is perfectly at home at the table, and not to be delegated merely to celebrations! Lush and rich, this is great sparkling wine...
Caparsa
Bianco Toscano 2010 "Bianco di Caparsino"
{biodynamic} Trebbiano, Malvasia (Tuscany, Italy)
PEAR SKIN, GINGER, PAPAYA, DRIED CITRUS. EXOTIC In 1982, Paolo Cianferoni started transforming his family's property in the heart of Chianti into an organic farm, leaving 60% of the land forested to maintain maximum sustainability. Though he concentrates on Sangiovese, a small parcel of his vineyard is devoted to the grapes that go into this distinctive...
40% Baga, 30% Tinta Roriz, 30% Touriga Nacional (Bairrada, Portugal) FIRM PRUNE, WALNUT & LEATHER, LUSH EARTH Baga, a sturdy black grape with firm tannin and a reputation for ageworthiness hasn't perhaps found its way onto the radar of the average American wine lover just yet, but it's nevertheless part of Iberia's dream team of outstanding and exclusive grape varietals. Complex, rustic, and somewhat anachronistic...
Viña Aliaga
Navarra Tinto 2005 "Reserva de la Familia"
75% Tempranillo, 25% Cab Sauv
(Navarra, Spain)
DEEP CHERRY, ORANGE PEEL, MATURE OAK, SILKY Show stopper Spanish Reserva here. The mahogany colored edge is just a hint that the wine has been maturing for some time. The nose leans old-school with orange peel, light cherries and lays down with silky plush tannins...
