It's hard to believe that our great nation is 238 years old! They grow up so fast. We remember when America was a little tyke, just thirteen colonies squabbling over whether to adopt a constitutional democracy or explore the ideals of the Vajjian Confederacy. And while we're still working out some problems, it is nonetheless cause for celebration. Come see us today for all your beverage needs, make a quick trip south for things that go boom, and have a safe and fun Independence Day!
~~~~
We will be closed tomorrow (Friday, July 4th) in observance of Independence Day and will reopen to our normal business hours on Saturday, July 5th.
As always, have a safe and happy fourth!
"It's so nice to come to a store where you don't have to be embarrassed about your lack of wine knowledge."
The ninth wonder of the world (our beautiful Rosé Garden) has re-sprouted in all it's pink, juicy glory. In fact, we have two gardens for the first time this year and a whole new cadre of gardeners to tend our Raleigh Rosé. Old favorites have returned along with the requisite new arrivals, and (as always) we will donate a portion of our rosé sales throughout the year to breast cancer research. So come shop in our magnificent garden. New rosé selections are continuously blooming, and you never know what might surface next!
This Saturday from 12 to 3 PM
in Durham & Raleigh
Join us this Saturday for a tour through the sprawling swath of central/northern Spain known as Castilla y León. We'll begin close to this collection of regions' center in Rueda, home to the Verdejo grape and some of Spain's most sought after whites. Next, in an outrageously un-July-savvy move, we'll go ahead and embark on our quest for the sensational reds that central Spain has to offer - the first coming from Zamora, close to the northeastern tip of Portugal. This youthful example of Tempranillo is fresh, firm, and as summery as full-figured reds come. Next, we'll venture northward into Bierzo (a region which, by most accounts, ought to be part of Galicia) for a bold and smokey example of the Mencia grape. Finally, we'll double back close to the eastern extreme of Castilla y León, near the origins of the (almost 600 mile long) Duero River. This is the Ribera del Duero region. Tempranillo is king here, and the tasting's final wine is an impressively structured and imposingly-statured red fit for a king. ¡Olé!
Bodegas La Soterraña
Verdejo 2012
"Olmedal"
100% Verdejo
(Rueda, Spain)
MEGA-AROMATIC, MUSKY GUAVA & LIME, MOUTHWATERING ACIDITY Rueda is known for its autochthonous grape, Verdejo, its gravelly soils, and the marriage between the two - a union which forges whites of intense tropical character and refreshingly bright acidity. The appellation covers...
Bodegas Francisco Casas
Tempranillo 2011 "Tochuelo"
100% Tempranillo (Western Castilla y León, Spain)
JUICY PLUM & RASPBERRY, SOFT SPICINESS, BRIGHT & YOUNG Eduardo and Jesús Casas represent their family's fourth generation to tend these vineyards in Zamora (located roughly an hour west of the city of Toro). They're proud of the extent to which their wines maintain the powerfully ripe fruit for which the region's arid climate is known while coaxing out a more modern freshness...
Bierzo 2011 "Abad Dom Bueno"
100% Mencia (Bierzo, Spain)
BLACKBERRY & CHOCOLATE, SMOKEY OAK, SUMPTUOUS EARTH It might come as a surprise, when considering the passion for history exemplified by Bodegas del Abad, that the estate has existed for just under a decade. Despite the bodega's recent arrival onto the scene, its proprietors are dedicated to the traditional grape varieties of northwestern Spain, focusing...
Bodegas Arrocal
Ribera del Duero 2011 "Arrocal"
100% Tempranillo (Ribera del Duero, Spain)
DENSE BLACK PLUM & MULBERRY, FIRM & FRESH, LUSCIOUS OAK Emerging from a small village in the western part of Ribera del Duero, Bodegas Arrocal is a relative newcomer, not producing its first wine until 2001. Resulting exclusively from harvesting by hand, this deliciously concentrated red is thick with plummy black fruit, spice and and a toasted creaminess from 6 luxurious...
