Book Signing for Underneath are the Words
|
December 6
The biblical story begins in a garden but ends in a city, the New Jerusalem. In this collection of sermons and short stories, Charlie Summers reflects on his forty years in urban ministry. Remembering Jeremiah's message to "seek the welfare of the city," this collection invites the reader to listen for what the Holy Spirit is saying to us today about the communities we live in.
Underneath Are the Words will be sold next Sunday in the Commons, and Charlie Summers will be available to sign your copy. Proceeds from the sale of the book support Boaz & Ruth, Inc.

One More Week for the Fall Food Drive
|

Through December 6
At this time of year, when we give thanks for our many blessings, First Pres Preschool is sponsoring a church-wide food drive for those who are less fortunate. Nearly 51,000 children in Central Virginia don't know where their next meal is coming from. Our food drive will help FeedMore reach out to children, families and seniors who don't have enough to eat.
Bags are available to take home and fill them with food. Containers for your donations will be placed in the hallways.
FeedMore's most needed items are:
- peanut butter
- canned tuna and chicken
- low sodium veggies
- fruits packed in juice
- spaghetti sauce (no glass, please)
- canned or dry beans
- hot and cold cereal
- whole grain snacks

Monday, December 7 7:00 pm
The holiday season brings on powerful memories and emotions, and it can be a particularly painful time for those who have lost a child. If you have experienced this loss, or know someone who has, we want you to know about a special service to be held at Church of the Holy Comforter, 4819 Monument Avenue, on Monday, December 7, at 7 p.m.
The Holiday Memorial Service, now in its ninth year, is an interfaith offering sponsored by several area congregations - Protestant, Roman Catholic, Jewish - to provide a time and place for families to remember the child they lost. The holiday season is filled with images and expectations of loved ones coming home, while bereaved parents and family members know that not everyone can be around the table. Moreover, "holiday cheer" seems to preclude bringing up the name or the memory of the deceased child. The Holiday Memorial Service offers an opportunity to do that, whether your child died 30 years ago, or three weeks ago; whether as an adult, a teenager, a child or an infant.
