This missionary position is made possible by a partnership with the Presbytery of the James, and FPC is one of the contributing congregations. Cindy is from Staunton, Virginia, and was for many years a successful journalist before hearing God's call to serve in Haiti.

RVA Bus Transit: What's Up and Why?
|
Come and learn about initiatives afoot for metropolitan-wide mass transit and what it might mean for our community. Metro Richmond currently ranks 92nd out of 100 top metro areas in terms of public transportation connectivity. On Oct 20, we will consider why improving transportation matters from civic and theological perspectives.
Improved mass transit that crosses lines of county and city will be a blessing to many people. It will enable people from the counties to get in to the city with less traffic congestion and fewer parking problems. All major cities offer this. So it will help welcome people to our city. Hospitality is an important virtue in Scripture.
It will enable people who are seeking jobs and job training to get from the city out to the counties, where many new entry-level jobs are located. So it will help the poor, a clear biblical mandate.
It will reduce the air pollution that comes with much auto traffic, making our part of God's creation a healthier place to live. Genesis chapters one and two make clear our role in caring for creation.
It will connect our lives in new ways. As Jeremiah reminds us, "seek the welfare of the city where I have placed you. For in its welfare you will find your own."

Our stewardship theme this year is "The Grace of Giving." As an act of His Grace, God has given us more than we need. Let us follow His example as we give in return. Give, and it will be given to you..for the measure you give will be the measure you get back. Luke 6:38 (NSRV)
Please prayerfully consider your gift to the ministry of Christ in and through First Presbyterian Church. You can pledge online or you may place your pledge card in the offering plate or mail it to the church office, 4602 Cary Street Road, Richmond, Virginia 23226.

The Officer Nominating Committee is seeking nominations for elders and deacons. You will find nomination forms in the Commons and online here. Please prayerfully consider those whom you would like to suggest as elected leaders of this church.
Elders are charged with the oversight of the life of our congregation. Deacons are charged with the sympathy, witness and service for all our members and the poor. One does not have to serve as a Deacon before serving as an Elder.
Please submit nominations by Sunday, November 1. We encourage you to nominate yourself if you feel called to serve. For more information, please contact committee chair Lisa Kunz.

Give Blood to Save Others
Blood Drive in Honor of Joan Trotti
Tuesday, October 20, 2:00 - 7:00 pm
Fellowship Hall
For 35 years, First Presbyterian has helped insure a healthy blood supply for premature babies, cancer patients, accident victims and many other women, men and children in this metropolitan region. The need for blood and plasma is great, and each individual's donation can help up to three people.
Our upcoming drive is in honor of FPC elder Joan Trotti, a long-time organizer of FPC blood drives. Joan went so far as to wear a Dracula cape and teeth at church to get people's attention to this critical need.
Please sign up now so that we can ensure an efficient process with enough staff. Sign up for an appointment online here. For questions about eligibility, click here or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Walk-ins are welcome as well.

Fall Hike and Vineyard Outing
|
Saturday, October 24
Depart from FPC at 8:30 am and return mid-afternoon
Join us for a moderate hike of approximately four miles, roundtrip, in Virginia's spectacular Blue Ridge Mountains. We will begin at the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area just off of the Blue Ridge Parkway and follow a section of the Appalachian Trail, the nation's premier hiking path. We will enjoy beautiful views of the Rockfish and Shenandoah Valleys. The elevation change on this hike is approximately 520 feet from the Humpback Rocks Picnic Area to the summit of Humpback Mountain (3,600 feet). NOTE: This is not the strenuous vertical climb up to Humpback Rocks that we hiked several years ago! After the hike, we will visit the close-by Afton Mountain Vineyards, whose motto is: "Grapes Don't Grow in Ugly Places!"

On-site registration begins at 3:15 pm. The walk begins at 3:30 pm
Did you know that a billion people do not have access to clean water, which results in disease and death, particularly among children? But we are helping to change that statistic in Haiti and Nicaragua by teaching communities to build and maintain clean-water systems. All donations from our walk will go to drilling a well in Haiti.
The walk is 3.7-mile round trip, which is the distance that many people in developing countries must walk each day for water for their families. Get friends to sponsor you. If you cannot walk, please consider giving a donation.
Bring your friends! Invite your neighbors! Bring children and babies in strollers!
Register online here, on the bulletin board across from the Chapel, or on-site the day of the walk. You may also give money online or on the day of the walk. Suggested donation: $20 a person, $40 per family. Checks may be made payable to First Presbyterian and noted "Walk for Water."
