10 Years Strong

Sustainability: A Great Example of Science & Technology at Pacific Ridge
Sustainability is and always has been an essential part of Pacific Ridge School. In addition to student-led recycling on campus and educational outreach to local elementary schools, our Service Learning program includes tech-based groups such as Alternative Energy Solutions, which creates biofuel to power on-campus events. Each building on our energy-efficient campus contains an energy dashboard so students can view energy consumption in real time and yearly competitions challenge students and faculty to conserve. Pacific Ridge has received multiple awards for its commitment to sustainability and to the environment, including a gold-level California Green Ribbon Award for the past three years. Our campus ranks high in the nation for sustainable design: Mullady Hall is LEED Gold Certified and all other permanent buildings are LEED compliant. Want to see science and technology in action? Just check out sustainability at Pacific Ridge!

Biotech Executive Highlights Importance of Genome
Being able to predict possible health problems is one of the major benefits of sequencing the human genome. Vice President of Applied Genomics at Illumina Dawn Barry spoke to the Pacific Ridge community today about the scientific advancements in genomics made since the connection between DNA and genes was first explored in 1953.The technology has come far in the years since the first human genome was sequenced in 1999, but, she cautions, it still has a way to go. Ms. Barry explained the potential genomics has for transforming the current medical system from one that addresses disease once it is present to one that can successfully focus on prevention and health promotion tailored to individuals. She urged students to educate themselves further about genomics and noted that numerous careers are available in the field for scientists and non-scientists alike.

New & Noteworthy

Mayor of Encinitas Discusses Leadership and Communication
Local government has the largest impact on its constituents compared to federal and state governments, according to Encinitas Mayor Catherine Blakespear. On May 2, she spoke to students about her path to becoming mayor and what students can do to get involved. She also talked about tough issues the city is facing, such as homelessness and a controversial bike plan known as the rail trail. Students were interested in her insights on dealing with different constituent groups and having civil conversations on polarizing topics. She was hosted by the new Feminists United group.

Google X and Non-Profit Entrepreneur Discusses Passion
After meeting a boy in Tanzania, Africa who couldn't afford an education, Matt Severson decided to do something. He launched The School Fund, a non-profit website that links donors with students in need of scholarship funds. On April 28, Mr. Severson spoke to students about the dedication and teamwork needed to create the non-profit. He also discussed the different projects he's worked on with Google X, including balloons that relay Wi-Fi signals to remote areas and flying wind-turbine kites. He encouraged students to find their passions and figure out ways to incorporate them into work and personal life.

La Jolla Playhouse Actors Host Workshop
Yelling insults at a student may not be the best teaching technique, although it has its place in theater. On May 2,  Artist Instructors
James Pillar and Jeffrey Ingman held a workshop to help students tap into raw emotions. They asked students to find emotional triggers to be translated on stage in a scene. Honors Theater and Advanced Acting and Directing students did quick monologues during class and then improved upon them with emotional triggers. They also learned common mistakes actors make with their gestures.

Curricular Adventures

10th Graders Cap Nuclear Unit at San Onofre Power Plant
After finishing up a nuclear energy unit in chemistry, 10th graders toured the San Onofre Nuclear Generating Station on April 24. The strict security at the plant meant students didn't actually go inside during their tour, but they still saw plenty. The entire grade split up into small groups to tour the facility, which is in the process of being decommissioned. Engineers discussed challenges they face with federal and state legislation while biologists talked about measures they take to keep the wildlife and flora in the area safe. Students also got a look at the storage construction for the spent fuel cells and learned about electrical safety.

Students tried on the safety gear required to enter the plant.

A group leader discusses intensive security protocols.

Middle Schoolers Program with Arduino
Arduino is an electronics platform that allows users to program interactive responses. On May 3, all middle school students had the chance to free-program the circuit boards during a workshop with Director of Science & Engineering Outreach Julie Gunther. STEAM Projects instructor Richard Masland also taught Arduino to seventh grade life science students. They learned how to program the boards to buzz or light up and will later use them to design their own experiments. Students have been studying nerve endings so will create experiments that test effects on human response time. A big thanks to Kent Meyer of Emcraft (and Pacific Ridge parent) for helping plan the project and putting the kits together!
