It's "utterly endearing... with a faint dusting of magical realism," according to one review of the play's Broadway production. Tickets, $10 for adults and $5 for students and seniors, are available here.

10 Years Strong

It's Athletics Week!
Nowhere else is the spirit, energy, and work of building the community called Pacific Ridge School more palpable than on our courts, fields, tracks, and sidelines. From starting teams to building the facilities those teams play in and on, many moments of uncertainty, laughter, frustration, collaboration, faith, and dedication have gone into the development of a robust program that now entails 35 teams, 8 CIF championships and a combined 80.5% participation rate among students! Originally playing in parking lots, warehouses, and makeshift fields, our Firebirds rose to soar on the beautiful artificial turf field opened in 2010 and in the fabulous, world-class athletic center opened in 2012. In between, in 2011, the Pacific Ridge athletic program achieved a significant milestone recognition and was promoted from Frontier League membership to Coastal League membership where it would begin to play peer schools such as Bishop's, Francis Parker, and Santa Fe Christian.  Pacific Ridge athletics had made its mark. With developmental boy's beach volleyball and baseball on the horizon and a fledgling hockey program underway, sports at Pacific Ridge are still growing and developing along with the interests and skills of the student athletes that fill the rosters.

Parents Association Tailgate a Big Hit
How many pizzas can a group of hungry teens eat in seven minutes? Thirty two, as the Parents Association volunteers found out during the Tailgate on April 18! Students and their families hung out on campus long after hours as part of the athletics week celebration. Food was available all afternoon to feed students and families watching the Girls Middle School Basketball teams and the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team. A big thanks to all of the wonderful parent volunteers who made it possible!

Thank you to the Parents Association for this year's tailgate!

The games after the tailgate gave fans something to cheer for!

Each student (except for seniors) had the opportunity to vote for their favorite candidates at the polls. Current Student Council members gave a brief description of their position and reminisced about the past year. All-School Vice President: Jordan Lee '18

Curricular Adventures

Middle School Students Tinker During Toy-Hackathon
Middle school students ripped and sawed open toys on April 12 all in the name of discovery. During the Toy-Hackathon led by Open Space Maker Labs, students took apart speakers, a Tickle-Me-Elmo, RC cars and more to create their own unique hybrid toys. The exercise allowed them to use their creativity while working on problem-solving abilities.

Students make unique creations.

SOCCOM Students Turn Border Trip into Podcast
Seventh graders visited the Tijuana-San Diego border earlier this month and on April 14, Mr. Masland's Social and Community Studies (SOCCOM) students turned their experience into a podcast. In essays reflecting their informed opinions, students explored the complexity of immigration policy reform. They read the essays aloud and edited the recordings into a podcast.

The hardest part? Staying quiet during everyone else's recording!

Service Learning in the Field

New Ocean Blue Cleans Up Swami's Beach
In honor of Earth Day, students in upper school service learning group New Ocean Blue combed Swami's Beach on April 19 for trash. They cleaned up any litter left behind by beachgoers or washed up on shore. Since it was the group's last beach cleanup of the year, they also had a celebratory picnic. In addition to beach cleanups, the group makes presentations to local elementary school students about water pollution and the ocean gyres.

Goodbye trash!

Educating Near and Far Teaches Sound Concepts
"First graders like to do," said a student about teaching Ocean Knoll students on April 19. Upper School service learning group Educating Near and Far visited Ocean Knoll Elementary School to share lessons about sound frequency and pitch. They brought three separate tactile activities to help the first graders learn different concepts, such as how sound waves travel. The group teaches STEM lessons locally while also raising funds to build a school in Nicaragua.

Give consideration to listening to this book, as it breaks new ground in audio recording!
