Firebirds Compete in Battle of Brains and Brawn
The Firebird spirit was in full force on Thursday, January 19 for the annual Field Day competitions. The Blue Team took on the Black Team in an afternoon of contests, including games such as tug of war, three-legged races, geography trivia and design-thinking challenges. In the end, the Blue Team reigned supreme and cheers could be heard throughout campus. The faculty showed they are as strong physically as they are mentally by beating the seniors in one final tug of war.

Community Discusses New Library and Innovation Center - You Can View the Designs Too!
On Thursday, January 19th, the students, parents, faculty, and trustees who participated in six focus group sessions in late September got to see the fruits of their labor. Pacific Ridge and Gensler Architects hosted an open house to reveal the design of a new campus facility that will house the library as well as several new innovation and design programs. Attendees got a glimpse into the process behind the building design, admired how beautifully the facility will fit with our existing campus, and learned about the community commitment needed to make this building a reality. For those interested in learning more, Director of Philanthropy Phil Consuegra is hosting several upcoming information sessions. Questions? Contact Mr. Consuegra at pconsuegra@pacificridge.org.

Curricular Adventures

Students and Faculty Share Their Voices Through Public Art
On Inauguration Day, the Pacific Ridge community came together for the school's first public art creation. All students were given the chance to write their hopes and dreams for the country on a Post-it note, which they then placed on a giant map of the United States in Community Hall. Thoughts ranged from "more listening," to "embrace our differences," to "science and technology for everybody!" The exhibit gives a glimpse into the varying opinions and ideologies of students who together make Pacific Ridge such a vibrant community. Please stop by community Hall to take a look and add your hopes and dreams.

Mexican Foreign Exchange Students Visit
Four exchange students from the Harkness Institute in Vallarta Nuevo, Mexico are spending two weeks with the Pacific Ridge community to learn about southern California, practice their English and create lasting international friendships. The students, who are familiar with the Harkness table from their own school, are diving right into classes and sharing their stories with Pacific Ridge students. While the rain has put a slight damper on the activities, the girls and their host families have been able to get outside and explore San Diego. Many thanks to the Freeman and Juskaitis families for hosting the visitors.

Robotics Club Hosts Regional Competition
Robots took over the Athletic Center on Sunday, January 22. Pacific Ridge upper school teams 4262 Ridgebots and 9266 Pyrobots hosted the final FIRST Robotics FTC league meet before the league championships. Teams were challenged to create a robot that could lift an exercise ball 5 feet above the field, respond to color cues and pick up and throw plastic particles into a hoop. A total of 15 teams came from as far away as Mexico to compete. Junior James Fardeen served as emcee and a dedicated team of Pacific Ridge parents and students volunteered to set up and run the event as a service to the youth robotics community. Come cheer on our two Pacific Ridge teams at the league championships!
Date: Saturday, February 4th
Time: 9:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m.
Place: Boys and Girls Club at 2230 E. Jewett Street, San Diego

Guilty or Innocent? 8th Graders Put Boo Radley on Trial
In Ms. Juskaitis' 8th-grade English class, students put on a mock trial as part of their discussion of To Kill a Mockingbird on January 23. The trial determined whether fictional character Boo Radley should be convicted for the death of Mr. Bob Ewell and if compensation was owed. The students played the roles of several characters including Judge Taylor, prosecuting attorney Mr. Gilmer, defense attorney Atticus Finch, and several witnesses and jurors. The jury ultimately found Boo Radley not guilty because of an Alabama law that states "a person is justified in using physical force upon himself or a third person for what he or she reasonably believes to be the use or imminent use of unlawful physical force by that other person." Students applied some tactics they learned watching real trials at the Vista Courthouse in late November.

ARC Consumers Visit Pacific Ridge for Fun and Friendship
On January 18th and 24th, middle school students welcomed consumers from the ARC of San Diego to campus for a fun-filled morning. Some students and visitors played sports outside while others worked to make spring-themed posters complete with pipe-cleaner flowers. The Honors Theater class led the visitors through improv exercises and a game of Simon Says, much to everyone's enjoyment. The ARC is one of San Diego's largest providers of services for children and adults with disabilities and they receive visits from Pacific Ridge 7th and 8th graders every week.

The Flock Flies High Against Maranatha Christian
The whole Pacific Ridge community took the generous amounts of school spirit generated on Field Day and put it to good use at the Boys Varsity Basketball game on Friday, January 20. Opponent Maranatha Christian sent a friendly "warning" that they would be bringing over 200 fans to the game, so The Flock's members pulled out the stops to encourage Firebird attendance and boy, did they succeed! The stands were packed with students, many wearing free shirts that were given out at a delicious Parent Association tailgate. Team Firebird didn't disappoint, beating Maranatha 52 - 41.
