New & Noteworthy

Middle School Spelling Bee Champion Crowned
What do "dandruff" "vengeance" and "worrywart" all have in common? Very little except that they were included in the middle school spelling bee on January 12. The top 10 percent of spellers were chosen to compete and Andres Jaime '22 was crowned the champion after correctly spelling "silhouetted." Andres will go on to compete in the regional championships at Balboa Park in March. Congratulations to all of the young spellers who competed!

Great job, Andres!

Curricular Adventures

Model United Nations Takes New York by Storm
Undeterred by unfamiliar winter weather, Pacific Ridge's Model U.N. team put in a strong performance this past weekend at Columbia University's Model United Nations Conference & Exposition (CMUNCE). Participating in scenarios ranging from King Kojong's Reign in 1864 to Germany in World War I and current day Maritime Security and Safety, students put their formidable Harkness and research skills into action, snagging several top awards. CMUNCE is a premier Model U.N. conference, drawing high school students from around the world. Congratulations go to the entire team, and specifically to the following award winners:

Jonah Gercke: Best Delegate, King Kojong's Reign
Alyssa Martindale: Best Delegate, Germany in Word War I
Vivian Yun: Outstanding Delegate, Maritime Safety & Security
Calvin Huang: Verbal Commendation, Marvel JCC

In between CMUNCE sessions, students took every opportunity to explore the Big Apple, including sharing a meal at Mr. Silk's favorite deli in New York, Barney Greengrass.

Young Actors Honor Shakespeare
Theater is alive and well on campus, as evidenced by the Shakespeare Monologues held January 12. Upper school students acted out monologues from plays such as Taming of the Shrew, Hamlet and King Lear. A panel of judges crowned Ollie McClymonds the winner for his well-executed performance of Hamlet's soliloquy from the nunnery scene (Act III Scene I). He will go on to compete in the Regional Competition on  February 2 at the North Coast Repertory Theater. Congratulations to second place winner and competition alternate Nick Hamparyan and third place winner Powell Sheagren.

Freshmen Explore Modern Mythologies
As part of studies on Homer's Odyssey, ninth grade students explored the ways in which mythologies function in modern life -- as stories that help us frame our understanding of the world, ourselves, and our society. For the Muse Project, students built their own mythologies using modern traditions of storytelling in a wide range of media. Students represented themselves through art installations, video documentaries and blogs, a self-written play, a 3D-printed chess board and more. The project culminated in a museum event in Mullady Hall on January 11th.

Maeve Hushman '20 performs her self-written play with classmates.

Varsity Ice Hockey Dominates the Rink
Varsity Ice hockey was back in action this weekend to take on the Bishop Armat Lancers in a showdown for sole possession of first place in league. Pacific Ridge dominated the game, winning 6 -1! Coaches Trevino and Richter attributed the victory to putting pucks behind the Lancer Defense and out muscling them in the corners. The team is headed to Notre Dame University on January 26 to play in the Hoosier cup where they will face off against the Illinois 2016 State Champions and other high-level prep school teams.  The next and last home game of the season is slated for February 4.

WinterFest A Roaring Success
After school on January 13, middle school students and their families joined together to celebrate sports and spirit. Students and siblings had full access to a taco bar, bouncy slide and fun halftime games, while fans filled the bleachers to cheer and witness a clen sweep of Firebird victories. Congratulations to girls and boys middle school soccer and boys middle school basketball. Meanwhile, varsity basketball coach Chris Burman said the upper school teams enjoyed the most energetic crowds they've had all year, complete with bongo players and packed stands. Go Firebirds!

New Faculty & Staff Snapshot

Kim Phillips - Athletic Trainer

Favorite or most recent book? My most favorite would probably be the one I haven't read yet! The most recent was Killing Kennedy: The end of Camelot ,by Bill O'Reilly and Martin Dugard and in my queue is The Cursed Child, by J.K. Rowling.
Favorite movie? Harry Potter, I can't help it, I'm a fan.
Favorite sport? You're asking this of an athletic trainer... Probably soccer. As a side note, if I'm not working, I don't watch sports.
Greatest indulgence? Pedicures. They are unfortunately few and far between.
If you make her breakfast? Please bring it late and if you watch my child so I can eat it in peace that would be really awesome.
In her free time? I go for walks on the beach with my 1-year old, playing at the park...
Dream vacation? I've always wanted to take a cruise to Antartica.
Home town? Colorado Springs, CO
