Educational Insights

Worth Reading
The desire to fit in is universal but why is it that some schools are less likely to be dominated by cliques than others? According to this Atlantic article, students who regularly interact with a diverse group of peers learn the benefits of unexpected friendships. Follow Dr. Ogle on Twitter to see regular articles about topics in education.

New & Noteworthy

Exploring the Adolescent Brain
Leave it to a Firebird to make brain chemistry interesting! At Community Life on December 1, former Pacific Ridge student Avery Rogers shared what she's learned doing research for her neuroscience podcast, Brainstorms. She discussed the differences in an adolescent brain versus an adult brain and how teenagers process stimuli differently. Touching on the intense reactions caused by rejection or getting bested during competition that are unique to the teenage brain, she assured students that their emotional responses to certain situations will level out with age.

Family Community Service Project Successfully Gives Back
The school and the Parents Association send sincere gratitude for the generosity of the Pacific Ridge School Community! Numerous donations resulted in the delivery of a large volume of clothing, shoes, accessories and toiletries to Veterans Village of San Diego for immediate use to assist homeless veterans and their families. A big thank you also goes to the enthusiastic middle school families who not only packaged the items for Veterans Village, but also decorated 50 tote bags and filled them with donated dog treats, toys and care items for Canine Companions, as well as a personal thank you note, which will be distributed to veterans and their service dogs throughout the Southwest region.

Professors Speak About Civic Engagement
University of San Diego Professors Andrew Tirrell (Political Science and International Relations) and Tom Reifer (Sociology) spoke on December 5 during lunch about civic engagement to interested students. They highlighted complex topics such as civic passivity and its effect on democracy, the recent election and change in administrations, and the importance of the first amendment. Dr. Riefer said he encourages his students to disagree with him. "Intellectually, it's a lot more interesting than agreeing with me because then I learn something new," he said. Next week, history teacher Phil Consuegra will bring his experience as a former political staffer to President George W. Bush, New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani and multiple state and local elected officials to a discussion of how students can get involved with local government.

Curricular Adventures

Eighth Graders See The Judicial System in Action
Eighth graders got a first-hand glimpse of the justice system on November 29 during a field trip to the San Diego County Vista Courthouse. The day started in the courtroom of Judge Harry Elias, where students learned about the trial aspect of our legal system from a group of public prosecutors and defenders. From there, students and teachers spent the rest of the morning observing an actual jury trial, as well as several pre-trial proceedings. They gained some important insights into the constitutional rights they've examined in American Studies as well as a better understanding of trial procedures before reading To Kill a Mockingbird

Yellow Deli Offers Lessons on Faith
Students learned that Vista's Yellow Deli is home to more than just delicious sandwiches. On November 29, Mr. Symington's World Religions class visited the cafe, which is run by members of the religious sect, the Twelve Tribes. He said they're a perfect living example of how some people try to access spiritualism through communal work and life. Students were able to ask questions of Yellow Deli employees to learn more about their faith, their work and how they live.

Advanced Design Students Visit Nixon Headquarters
Surfboards, free drinks and roaming dogs couldn't distract Advanced Design students from learning about branding while touring the headquarters of watch manufacturer Nixon. On December 7, Nixon co-founder and Pacific Ridge parent Andy Laats showed students around the Encinitas facility and discussed the challenges of creating things people both want and have never seen before. Students learned the process of designing a watch from scratch and the influences political, cultural and fashion trends have on product development. Students will use what they learned on an upcoming project: Pacific Ridge's 10th year anniversary logo!

Silent Auction for Syrian Refugees a Success
On November 30, sophomore Katie Meitchik hosted a silent art auction with Kids for Peace. Syrian art therapist Massa Abujeib painted special pieces for the evening event which raised over $2,500. Katie became interested in the Syrian refugee crisis after learning about it in her Modern World History class. Ms. Abujeib will take the funds back to Syria to work with homeless refugees.

Katie and her mom celebrate both art and peace.
