New & Noteworthy

Little Free Libraries Continue to Spread
On October 19th, Upper School Spanish 3 & 4 students traveled to the Carlsbad Barrio, where they visited with the area's community museum at Lola's Deli, and spoke with longtime community members Ofie Escobedo and her daughter, Teri. The conversation, conducted in Spanish, centered around the history of Carlsbad. Students plan to follow up their visit by decorating and installing three Little Free Libraries, a continuation of a project begun earlier in the year by Pacific Ridge faculty and staff.

Curricular Adventures

Mercedes-Benz Designer Talks Car Concepts
It takes decades to develop a car from concept to production, and Head Designer of Advanced Design at Mercedes-Benz, Christopher Rhoades, gave design students a sneak peek at what they can expect to see in the distant future. On October 21, he spoke to students in 3D Design & Prototyping, Advanced Design and Middle School Design & Programming Skills about turning his knack for drawing into a career with Mercedes Benz, highlighting some past and present projects. Students learned about the challenges of designing within practical limits as well as the creative freedom that designing fantasy cars allows.

Acting Workshop Compares On-Camera Work to the Stage
"The camera is your best friend," actor Anthony McMurray enthused to Advanced Acting & Directing students, "it will follow you everywhere." On October 21, the Academic Advisor to the New York Conservatory for the Dramatic Arts worked with theater students to highlight the difference between acting on the stage and in front of the camera. As part of the workshop, students performed monologues on camera, which were then played back for analysis and discussion.

Service Learning in the Field

New Service Learning Group: Raptor Rehab
Raptor Rehab, a new Upper School Service Learning group supports the care of injured birds of prey throughout Southern California. On October 25, Aireo Shipman from Project Wildlife visited the group to discuss his work and guide students as they began building an aviary for "Squeaks", a two year-old red-tailed hawk who is being rehabilitated and needs a permanent home. The aviary will be built on campus in pieces, then assembled and installed in its permanent location in Ramona. Students will get a chance to meet Squeaks when he visits campus in November.
