New & Noteworthy

Launch Your School Spirit With the Spirit App!
This week a new Spirit App launched which shows all of the athletic and arts events going on at Pacific Ridge School. Students will earn points for their grade level when checking in to an event. The grade level with the most points at the end of the year will get a free dress day. Parents don't earn points but can use the app to find events they can attend on campus. Interested? E-mail Coach Sara VanderHorst at SVanderHorst@PacificRidge.org and download the app here.

Mock Election: The Results Are In!
On October 18 the results of the state-wide Mock Student Election were announced. Throughout California, middle and high schoolers voted for their top picks. Hillary Clinton won by a large majority in the presidential race - 58 percent of students chose her while 20 percent chose Donald Trump. Gary Johnson received 8 percent while Jill Stein and Gloria Estela La Riva each received 7 percent. Loretta Sanchez earned a spot in the U.S. Senate and students voted yes on all the California initiatives included on the student ballot: Propositions 51, 54, 55, 56, 58, 59 and 67.

Curricular Adventures

Photography Students Connect Art With the Election
On October 13, Ms. Pietrowski's Advanced Photography students traveled to the Museum of Modern Art in La Jolla for inspiration. They're working on a project inspired by the election using imagery to connect with contemporary issues in politics. The exhibit The Uses of Photography: Art, Politics, and the Reinvention of a Medium gave students context and ideas for their projects.

Election Highlights Proportional Reasoning
The upcoming election has provided some valuable teaching opportunities, one of which includes proportional reasoning. Algebra I teachers Ms. Bjornstad and Ms. Tadder showcased three different voting models in which students voted for their favorite "candydates." The exercise highlighted the pros and cons of direct popular vote and representative voting while also showcasing the Electoral College model. Which "candydate" won in Ms. Bjornstad's class? Gummy bears!

HoloLens and Mixed Reality 101
"We'll yell if you're about to run into anything," enthused a student in the After-School Extension class "HoloLens 101." It's a warning that might actually be necessary when trying out virtual reality. Students get hands-on training with programming, learn to code through video game software Unity and play the games they create. The HoloLens mixed reality goggles allow wearers to see their surroundings while also playing a game through the lens. The best part about the class, according to students is getting to use the cutting edge technology, "with friends."

Service Learning in the Field

Students Spread Halloween Cheer at the Arc
Middle school students visited the Arc of San Diego October 10, much to the delight of the Arc consumers. They worked together to decorate the facility for the Halloween holiday. Everyone enjoyed themselves decorating pumpkin stickers and draping festive orange and black pom poms.

Students decorated the Arc with Halloween decorations.
