New & Noteworthy

Global Travel Highlights at Community Life
At Community Life on September 29, the school heard presentations about two of last year's 11th and 12th-grade trips. Students who traveled to Cambodia to study social justice described their visit to the Killing Fields, meetings with NGOs, a 7-day homestay in a rural island village, and what they learned about the complexities of poverty, tourism and volunteering. Students who designed their own trip to study Europe's refugee crisis explained how they planned and budgeted for the trip, described interviews they conducted with refugees and citizens in Italy and Germany, and showed a preview of the video documentary they will be sharing with the community. Juniors and seniors are submitting their interest surveys for 2017 global travel this week.

Tyler Chen '15, Cal Hyperloop Team Readying for Takeoff
We heard recently from Tyler Chen '15, who is part of the UC Berkeley Hyperloop Team, one of 22 chosen from more than 180 teams worldwide in the SpaceX Hyperloop Pod Competition. The team is working overtime on their next version of the pod design in order to be ready for January's Competition Weekend. To learn more about the project, click here. For a cool video explaining the Hyperloop and to make a much-appreciated donation, click here.

Curricular Adventures

The Power of Persuasion
Students in Mr. Decrop's Theory of Knowledge class capped a study of the Sophists and their influence on Plato, Aristotle and other political thinkers by examining the power of persuasion. Students researched persuasive devices and analyzed their use in contemporary media. Working with Mr. Masland, they then created their own persuasive media projects, which included video documentaries, commercials, public service announcements, print advertisements, political cartoons, and more. From pitching products to appealing for funds to fight Zika, the projects were persuasive, indeed!

Service Learning in the Field

TOSS Delivers for San Diego Schools
Upper School Service Learning group TOSS (Tools Organize Successful Students) helped students at three separate elementary schools start the year equipped when they delivered gently-used school supplies to Ibarra, Cherokee Point, and Edison Elementary Schools. Started four years ago by Pacific Ridge junior David Wiesley, TOSS is now a 501(c)3 non-profit that helps underfunded schools provide their students with the supplies they need to succeed academically. Last year, TOSS provided school supplies to over 3,500 children in San Diego. For more information, click here

Ella Shreiner '21, Takes Part in Aladdin
Performer Ella Schreiner recently finished a run as Iago the Parrot, Jafar's sidekick, in J*Company Youth Theatre's production of Aladdin. This was her 13th production at J*Company, so she is accustomed to the grueling rehearsal schedule - two to three hours Monday through Thursday and four hours on Sundays. Ella will be playing Ursula in the upcoming Pacific Ridge Middle School musical, The Little Mermaid. Don't miss it!
