Snapshot from the Ridge

Each week, Pacific Ridge School invites you to enjoy a spontaneous view of school life.

Picture Perfect Pop: Last weekend, Mr. Park's Conceptual Physics students launched Pacific Ridge's second, and final, weather balloon of the year. It traveled 101,000 feet into the stratosphere before the onboard GoPro captured this stunning image of its explosion. The balloon reached a diameter of 30 feet before it popped.

New & Noteworthy

Students Embrace Earth Week Initiatives
During Earth Week, Pacific Ridge students, faculty, and staff celebrated the community's commitment to environmental awareness with a number of sustainability challenges and activities. Wednesday's "Blackout Day" and Thursday's "Waste-Free Lunch" encouraged careful consideration of classroom energy usage and lunchtime food waste, while a campus wide energy reduction challenge had Upper and Middle School students battling to be named conservation champions. The week ended with a Community Life presentation by Chuck Samuleson, a Pacific Ridge alumni parent and President of the local non-profit, Kitchens For Good. Samuelson spoke about his organization's mission to break the cycles of food waste, poverty and hunger through innovative programs in workforce training, healthy food production, and social enterprise.

Performers Set the Scene for a Shakespearian Celebration
On Wednesday, April 20th, Pacific Ridge came alive with verse and rhyme as four professional Shakespearian actors roamed the campus in celebration of National Poetry Month and Shakespeare's Birthday. The actors popped into classrooms and offices to deliver monologues, sonnets, and hip-hop style breakdowns of the bard's poems. During lunch, students got into the Shakespearian spirit by participating in flattery and insult slam competitions using Elizabethan era vocabulary. Students delighted in stringing together barbs including, "thou art a peevish, sour-faced boar," then soothing the sting with compliments including "is thou not the most delicate, honey-tongued wafer-cake?"

Student Council Executives, Class Presidents Elected
The votes are in for Pacific Ridge School's 2016-2017 Upper School Student Council. Congratulations and welcome to Executive Council members Amanda Mickelson, President; Samuel Canseco, Vice President; Sarah Levitt Secretary; and Max Dawson, Treasurer; 12th-Grade President, Christian Yun; 11th-Grade President, Ashly Chavez; and 10th-Grade President, Matteo Miller. Voting for class representatives will take place on May 10th, and President and representatives for the Class of 2020 will be elected in the fall to allow new students the opportunity to participate.

This year's Student Council President, Brij Sahney, passes the
gavel to President-elect Amanda Mickelson.

Curricular Adventures

Students Get Backstage Pass to Guitar Construction
8th-grade students in the STEAM-oriented Making Music class are applying their Conceptual Physics knowledge to explore the acoustics of music. They are also receiving a hands-on education in the importance of good design, precise measurements, and an engineer's problem-solving mindset, by building various stringed and percussion instruments. Last week, the group had an opportunity to see how the professionals at Taylor Guitars, the top manufacturer of acoustic guitars in the United States, seamlessly combine art, skill, and technology to produce quality products. During a tour of the Taylor factory in El Cajon, the group witnessed the entire guitar construction process, from wood selection to final assembly.

Service Learning In The Field

Service Learning Students Perform at Alvin Dunn Elementary
Upper School Service Learning groups On Pointe and Notes of Hope share a similar mission - to spread joy and inspiration through the power of the performing arts. On Wednesday, April 20th, the groups teamed up to put on music and dance performances at Alvin Dunn Elementary School in San Marcos. The third grade audience members were spotted dancing in their seats during On Pointe's contemporary piece, and singing along to Notes of Hope's rendition of Justin Bieber's "Love Yourself." After the performances, the students received many high-fives and hugs from their new fans.
