Seniors and Juniors Enjoy Off-Campus Day
On Friday, March 4th, the senior class traded classrooms for rollercoasters, while juniors explored fine art and wild animals. At Knotts Berry Farm, seniors enjoyed a wide-open park with plenty of time to take repeat turns on favorite rides and experience all the games and entertainment Knott's has to offer. Meanwhile, juniors walked on the wild side at the San Diego Zoo and brushed up on everything from art history to aerospace technology at Balboa Park's 15 museums. The annual "off-campus day" gives Pacific Ridge's hardworking juniors and seniors a chance to "unplug," relieve stress, and connect with one another outside of class.

Juniors bonded amongst the bears at the San Diego Zoo.

Local Students, Faculty Meet to Discuss Inclusivity
On Wednesday, March 2nd, a group of upper school students and faculty members represented Pacific Ridge at the San Diego Independent Schools Inclusivity Meeting. The event, which took place at La Jolla Country Day School this year, provides an opportunity for cross-school conversations on the meaning of diversity, inclusivity, multiculturalism, and equity.

The Sweet Sounds of Community Life in Spring
Last week, faculty and students took full advantage of the beautiful spring weather and the campus' incredible outdoor performance space during a Community Life featuring student musicians. Click the video below to hear a sample of the entertainment provided by 8th-grade Instrumental Ensemble, Upper School Contemporary Music Ensemble, and Upper School Honors Contemporary Music Ensemble.

Curricular Adventures

Students Explore Social Identity Through Creative Expression
In the DIME (Diversity, Inclusivity, Multiculturalism, Equity) Skills class this trimester, 8th-grade students have been exploring what the National Association of Independent Schools refers to as the "Big Eight" social identifiers: ability, age, ethnicity, gender, race, religion, sexual orientation and socioeconomic status. Students considered how the identifiers have impacted their own experiences and the experiences of others, while also engaging in discussions about stereotypes, power, privilege, and more. Each student completed a creative project, from videos to collages, representing a social identifier of their choice. During last week's "gallery walks," students and faculty were invited to view the projects, engage in conversation, and ask questions.

Graphics 2 Students Create Diner Designs
Recently, students in Graphics 2 had an opportunity to gain real-world experience by creating marketing materials for the 101 Diner in Encinitas. The class interviewed Pacific Ridge parent Scott Smith, owner of the diner, to get a sense of the restaurant's vibe, values, and biggest selling points. The student's final designs, honed through several rounds of feedback with Mr. Smith and graphics teacher Mrs. Schmidt, featured elements including excerpts of positive Yelp reviews, food photos, and retro-style graphics. Mr. Smith was so pleased with the quality of the students' work that all 14 designs will be rotated as marketing posters in front of the diner.

Service Learning In The Field

Service Learning Groups Showcase Progress
On Tuesday, March 8th, all 34 Upper School Service Learning groups participated in panel reviews designed to showcase progress, solicit feedback, and recruit new members. Each group created a short video to demonstrate its daily activities and overall mission. After viewing the films, group members answered questions from panelists including 9th-grade students, faculty and staff. Ninth graders embraced the opportunity to learn which service learning groups fit their interests and talents. At the end of April, freshmen will decide whether to join one of the existing service learning groups or propose a group of their own.
