New & Noteworthy

Students Attend Diversity Leadership Conference
Last week, six Pacific Ridge students joined Mr. Betzala, Ms. Capozzoli, Dr. Rosenwong and Dr. Smith at the 2015 Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Tampa. The conference, sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools, is a gathering for upper school student leaders to examine issues of diversity on high school campuses. This year's theme was "Learning to Listen and Listening to Learn: The Art of Dialogue and The Science of Living Justly." Students developed cross-cultural communication skills, participated in self-reflection and community building activities, and gained a better understanding of effective strategies for social justice.

Model United Nations Teams Up with High Tech High for North Coast Regional Conference
On December 12th, Pacific Ridge's Model United Nations club joined High Tech High North Country to jointly host the 5th annual North County Regional Conference (NCRC). The conference attracted 200 students from over 10 high schools across San Diego and Orange County. True to its unique tradition, the NCRC put a creative spin on committees to provide original, unconventional scenarios for the delegates' diplomatic work. This year's committees included the Hunger Games, Greek City-States during the Peloponnesian War, and a Joint Committee featuring the campaign managers of the 2016 Trump and Sanders campaigns. The conference was a huge success, and the delegates rose to all of the atypical challenges thrown at them.

Dr. Shermer Tackles Critical Thinking, Conspiracy Theories
On Wednesday, December 2nd, Dr. Michael Shermer, founding publisher of Skeptic magazine, talked scientific reasoning, critical thinking and conspiracy theories during Community Life. Dr. Shermer, a Presidential Fellow at Chapman University, demonstrated the power of suggestion by asking the audience to find hidden images in abstract photos and listen to a popular rock song played backwards. Students were surprised to find themselves seeing and hearing things that weren't actually there, and everyone enjoyed learning about the psychological components involved in such "tricks of the mind." Dr. Shermer encouraged students to pursue science and reason when faced with questionable truth, and to remain curious and skeptical of the world around them.

Pacific Ridge Students and Staff Join Vigil for Peace
On Tuesday, December 8th, students, teachers and administrators joined members of the Jewish Collaborative of San Diego, the North County Islamic Foundation and Christ Presbyterian Church of Carlsbad at a candlelight vigil for the victims of the December 2nd shootings in San Bernardino. Participants joined together, across faiths, to condemn violence in the name of religion. Please click here to see video news coverage of the event.

Curricular Adventures

Honors Spanish Students Get Goofy for "Sábado Gigante"
Last month, students in Mrs. Brady's Honors Spanish 4 classes were tasked with creating their own versions of the late, great "Sábado Gigante." The Spanish-language variety program, which ran for 53 years, featured an eclectic mix of contests and entertainment. Students embraced the opportunity to play the role of iconic host Don Francisco and his cadre of kooky sidekicks and competitors. In segments where bad singers are carted off stage by Gumby, unfaithful lovers are hooked up to lie detectors, and contestants are encouraged to mimic animal noises for a shot at a prize, students demonstrated impressive Spanish conversation skills and improvisation.

Liberty in North Korea Group Discusses Human Rights and Human Rescues
On Tuesday, December 8th, representatives from Liberty in North Korea (LiNK) presented to Upper School students about the plight of citizens in North Korea who experience harsh living conditions and who are sealed off from the rest of the world by the North Korean government. In addition to raising awareness of human rights issues, the group organizes rescues of North Korean refugees hiding in China and resettles them in South Korea and occasionally in the United States. As of October, 2015, over 400 refugees have been rescued and resettled. The LiNK service learning group helps raise awareness on campus and assists in fundraising for the organization.
