New & Noteworthy

Girls Varsity Tennis Wins Its First CIF Championship!
On October 30th, the Pacific Ridge Girls Varsity Tennis Team won its first California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) Championship!
The fourth-seeded Firebirds captured the Division II title with a 15-3 win over No. 3 Patrick Henry at the Barnes Tennis Center in Point Loma on Friday. Throughout the week, Pacific Ridge advanced through the playoffs with victories against Monte Vista (#13), Eastlake (#5) and San Marcos (#8). The championship win is an exclamation point on a perfect division record, as well as a fitting redemption for last year's double tiebreaker loss in the Division III finals. Congratulations to the players and coaches on an amazing season, an incredible playoff run, and a history-making championship!

Halloween Parade Proves Frighteningly Fun
On October 30th, student and faculty creativity was on full display during a delightful, sometimes frightful, afternoon Halloween parade and costume contest. A steady stream of inventive costumes ranging from the delicious (a box of cheerios, a donut), to the clever (a human pac man game, the Mona Lisa), and the spooky (a creepy clown, a mesmerizing werewolf) to the silly (a piece of dirt, bananas), made the judges' deliberations difficult. Visit the Pacific Ridge Facebook page to view all the winning costumes, and many more photos from the day!

Glinda, the Good Witch reigned supreme as the
"Best Overall" costume winner.

The judges were transfixed by this scary-good take on a Werewolf.

This year's "Most Creative" costume was a real work of art.

Seniors Pump Up The Joy With Bubble Soccer Tournament
The plays weren't pretty, the passes weren't crisp, and the athletes weren't often upright, but Monday's senior bubble soccer tournament drew quite a crowd. Classmates, faculty, and staff stopped by the field to take in the spectacle: teams of students (and one intrepid faculty team) colliding, wobbling, and flailing during 5-minute, small-sided soccer games played inside of inflatable zorbs. The bubble ball tournament succeeded in providing seniors with some well-deserved fun and relaxation amidst tough academic schedules and looming college application deadlines, and both participants and spectators were left feeling buoyant!

Curricular Adventures

Language and Arts Come Together for Dias De Los Muertos
World language classes, visual arts classes, the Latinos Unidos affinity group and the Parents Association joined forces to celebrate El Dia De Los Muertos on Monday. Last week, students helped create a beautiful altar in Mullady Hall. Language students decorated the altar with handmade, traditional crafts, visual arts students painted sugar skull watercolor prints to surround the altar, and all members of the Pacific Ridge community were invited to participate by placing photos or objects on the altar in honor of departed loved ones. Latinos Unidos also offered to paint "calaveras," or sugar skulls on students' faces as part of Pacific Ridge's Day of the Dead celebration.

John Rowe Talks Photography With Social Conscience
Last week, local photographer, filmmaker, and businessman John Rowe visited Advanced and AP Photography. He shared insights into his techniques and inspirations as a professional photographer who captures everything from surfing in Tahiti to religious rituals in India. Rowe emphasized the importance of making images with a social conscience and using photography to affect change for those in need. In addition to working for major publications around the world, he founded and operates Omo Child, a non-profit committed to providing a safe home and quality education for rescued Mingi children in Ethiopia.

Service Learning In The Field

Global Vantage Helps Infants in Papua New Guinea
Global Vantage, Pacific Ridge School's award-winning, student-run magazine is helping save the lives of infants 7,000 miles away. The Upper School service learning group recently donated more than $1200 to help launch Helping Babies Breathe programming in Papua New Guinea - a nation that struggles with high infant mortality rates. Students funded the purchase of five NeoNatalie devices (realistic, inflatable simulators designed to teach basic neonatal resuscitation skills and facilitate role-play of newborn-care scenarios). Commander Natalie Burman, wife of Global Vantage faculty advisor Chris Burman, was one of the medical professionals who helped deliver the supplies via the U.S. Navy's Project Handclasp. Using the kits donated by Global Vantage, crew members provided a one-day training course to fourteen nurses, midwives and community health workers. According to Cmdr. Burman, course attendants have already used their newly acquired skills to save lives.

Cmdr. Burman instructs Papua New Guinea health workers on
proper neonatal resuscitation technique.
