Global Vantage Issue 11 is Hot Off the Press!
The theme of Pacific Ridge's Global Vantage Issue 11 is Conflict, and includes articles about political strife in Northern Ireland, Mali, and Greece, a photo story about the recent protests in Ukraine, and personal essays on using yoga and nature to remain grounded in a conflicted world. The student-run magazine, with articles written by authors both within the Pacific Ridge community and across the world, can be picked up free of charge on-campus, but regular readers are encouraged to support Global Vantage by signing up for an annual subscription. Subscription funds help cover printing costs and support this year's Global Vantage social action project in Papua New Guinea.

Global Vantage Issue 11 includes a photo story with images
from the front lines of the Ukraine conflict.

New and Noteworthy

Good Causes and Good Times Found at Fall Fest
Pacific Ridge families and friends braved the heat on Saturday, October 10th to support student service learning groups and clubs while celebrating the changing seasons. Attendees enjoyed perennial Fall Fest favorites such as the bake sale, faculty dunk tank, musical performances, and the silent auction; all while learning about, and contributing to, worthwhile causes. Thank you to all of the hard-working volunteers, students and staff who continue to make Fall Fest a cherished community event.

The New Haven Night Shelter service-learning group sold cotton candy
and cookies with ice cream to raise funds for a shelter in South Africa.

A Million Knots, a service-learning group dedicated to providing educational opportunities to underprivileged girls in India, offered Henna tattoos.

The Robotics Club hosted an open build session to inspire
kids to pursue engineering and robotics.

Student performers, including this sibling duo, kept the Fall Fest crowd cheering.

Richard Lederer Shares Love of Language
Last week's Community Life guest, wordplay wizard Richard Lederer, left students and faculty laughing, groaning, and scratching their heads over his mastery of language. Lederer is a speaker, teacher, and author of more than 30 books about grammar, oxymorons, anagrams, and more. He read several pun-filled excerpts from his latest book, Monsters Unchained, then shared his personal journey from an unhappy pre-med student to a joyful and fulfilled "verbivore." Following his presentation, Lederer stopped by several English classes, where he joined discussions about poetry and fiction, and answered students' questions about his life and career.

Curricular Adventures

Anatomy Students Dig Into Osteology
Make no bones about it, students in Mr. Kelso's Anatomy & Physiology class aren't afraid to get a little messy for the sake of science. Last week, students donned aprons and gloves and got to work cutting, prodding, and examining a variety of fresh cow bone specimens. The class has been learning about the many cells and tissues that form the dynamic bone structure, and students were excited to have a hands-on opportunity to explore the diaphysis, periosteum, and other parts of the bone's anatomy.

Service Learning In The Field

Animal Allies Helps Promote 'Howl-o-ween' Adoptions
Middle School Service Learning's Animal Allies want the dogs and cats at Carlsbad's Department of Animal Services to get the sweet treat of adoption this Halloween season. Last week, students participated in a festive, promotional photo shoot that will be used to introduce these furry friends to prospective families. Students have been working with staff and getting to know the animals during weekly visits to the shelter. The group helps with feedings, cleans cages and kennels, and is learning about the homeless animal problem, spaying and neutering, responsible pet ownership and animal safety.

Parents Association

Thank You For Making Fall Fest A Success!
The Parents Association greatly appreciates everyone who helped make this year's Fall Fest a success - the students who shared information about their clubs and service learning activities; the performers; the parents who devoted time and energy to organize, decorate, and work at the event; the generous donors for the raffle, silent auction, and the bake sale; the faculty & staff members who helped the event run smoothly and those who were willing to take the plunge in the dunk tank; the food vendors; and all the attendees! Supporting the efforts of Pacific Ridge's service learning groups and clubs means supporting a variety of organizations who are dedicated to making this world a better place.
