8th Graders Find Global Engagement Close To Home

On May 6th, the 8th-grade class split into groups for an afternoon of cultural discovery at the Pala Indian Reservation, Chicano Park, and Tijuana. At all three locations, students connected with partner schools to explore the concept of community, gain new perspective, and identify commonalties and differences among the many smaller communities within the San Diego/Tijuana region.

Pala Indian Reservation: The group visited the Cultural Heritage Center and learned about the history and culture of the
Cupeño Tribe. Then, students ran interactive work stations for local elementary school kids that connected academic disciplines to college majors and careers. For example, one group educated its elementary school visitors about careers in music and then guided a drum circle.

Chicano Park: Students learned how peaceful protest led to the establishment of Chicano Park in the 1970's, and how it became one of the largest assemblages of public murals in North America. The group met with students from San Diego's King Chavez school to share in activities and work on reflective projects that included photography, creative writing, sketching, Spanish-English translations, and STEAM-based interpretations of the park's art and history.

Tijuana: At CETYS University, Pacific Ridge students met with 9th graders from Tijuana independent school Colegio Reina Isabel. Together, the students played volleyball, competed in relay races, dance competitions, and more. Students also had the opportunity to engage in discussion about similarities and differences between the two schools and communities, practice language skills and form cross-cultural friendships.

Faculty and Staff Treated to Appreciation Celebration!

Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day was celebrated on Tuesday, May 12th. At lunchtime, Community Hall transformed into a spring paradise complete with vibrant table settings, fresh flower bouquets, succulent party favors, and other thoughtful touches, including a photo slideshow of students expressing thanks to their teachers. Pacific Ridge faculty and staff enjoyed a delicious spread of Greek dishes prepared and presented by the Parents Association, and cheered a number of faculty members who won gift cards and prizes in a raffle drawing. Thank you to all the Parents Association volunteers who worked tirelessly to make the lunch a memorable treat!

Faculty and staff come together for a well-deserved celebration!

Upper School Colloquium Showcases Student Work
At Community Life on May 7th, Upper School students and faculty were treated to presentations of exceptional academic work. Students nominated by their teachers spoke about creative projects ranging from original dance choreography and astrophotography to a video tour of the campus narrated entirely in Chinese and helpful tips on writing a research paper. For their nominations, faculty members selected student work that reflected creativity, strong understanding, thorough execution and exceptional attention to detail.

PhotoScience Students Give Camera Assembly A Shot
Last week, middle school students in PhotoScience examined the science of digital photography from the inside out. The group assembled Bigshot cameras, do-it-yourself photo assembly kits designed for experiential learning. While putting together the camera's gears, axles, modules and electronics, students gained insight into various science and engineering concepts. For example, students learned how mechanical energy (turning a dynamo on a hand crank) can be turned in to electric potential energy stored in a battery. When the cameras were assembled, students practiced using the relatively simple machines to make beautiful artwork.

AP French Students Appease Appetites, Intellect

On Thursday, May 7th, Mr. Stella's AP French students took a trip to the French Corner Cafe and Bakery to celebrate a successful year of études françaises! Students had a chance to speak with the cafe's Parisian owner and enjoyed sampling authentic French treats. Over macarons and pain au chocolat, the group discussed the novel L'Enfant Noir, by Camara Laye. According to Mr. Stella, the coming-of-age story about a young man from Guinée is not only a great piece of Francophone literature, it is also a touchpoint for cultural comparison and reflection for students as they, too, prepare to leave their families and head off to college.

Girls Varsity Track & Field Wins Pacific League

Congratulations to the Girls Varsity Track and Field athletes on being named 2015 Pacific League Champions. The girls team finished the season 7-0, undefeated in league meets. Still, the the championship title wasn't guaranteed, as only the final meeting between the schools is used to determine the league champions. On May 7th, with just one event remaining, the girls team was tied with Classical Academy. A last-minute victory by the 4 x 400 relay team clinched the championship - though everyone contributed to the team's victory along the way!
