The winning groups, 'Craft Care Kits' and 'Match Politics' were offered grants to move forward with their ideas. DeSoto Mayor '15 and Ames '16 Named Finalists in Ben Vereen Musical Theatre Awards
Congratulations to senior Benjamin DeSoto Mayor and junior Catherine Ames on being named 2015 Ben Vereen Award Finalists. At the high-school musical theatre competition, Ben and Catherine each performed a piece from their nominated roles in Pippin, as well as a contrasting piece that demonstrated their range. The pair also learned music and choreography for the show's opening and closing numbers, and attended a master class taught by Vereen. Ben and Catherine will now move on to the Southwest Region Finals, which take place at the end of the month in Tucson, Arizona. From there, one actor and one actress will be selected to compete at the National High School Musical Theatre Awards in New York.

Curricular Adventures

8th-Grade Students Feed Their Need For Speed

Recently, 8th graders spent a day at K-1 Speed putting their Conceptual Physics knowledge in motion. Students were briefed by the K-1 Speed staff on safety and driving strategy before donning head socks and helmets for a chance to feel centripetal motion when rounding a high-speed corner, test the limits of friction when breaking and steering and attempt to post the fastest lap time. When students weren't racing, they were solving problems related to the physics involved in the acceleration, turning, and power of the electric carts. The outing gave students an opportunity to use the knowledge and skills they have acquired in Conceptual Physics during the last trimester and a half.

Dance 2 Students Fall In Step With Expert Teachers

Last week, students in Mrs. Moore's Dance 2 class had the opportunity to learn from two master teachers who are experts in their respective styles. Gabby Esquivel and Hannah Webb, both teachers at Pacific Motion Dance Center in Carlsbad, stopped by to teach hip-hop and contemporary dance. The teachers helped the students refine their technique and skill, and to learn, practice, and perform new choreography with expert guidance.

Service Learning in the Field

Service Learning Group Breathes New Life Into History

New Upper School service learning group ANKH (Advancement of Narratives in the Knowledge of History) has set out to promote students' interest in learning history. The group plans to visit local primary schools, presenting history lessons that are fun, engaging, and that prompt students to view the discipline, and the world, differently. Last week, ANKH taught a lesson on Renaissance art vs. modern art to 7th and 8th graders at Encinitas Country Day School. The lesson began with a spirited game of Pictionary and ended with students examining art from each genre, then discussing how differences in use of color, emotion and subtext reflected the differences in societal beliefs then and now.
