Ethics Class Simulates Refugee Experience

Students in Mr. Decrop's Ethics class dedicated a portion of Heritage Food Day to educating their peers about travel and asylum as experienced by numerous refugee groups around the world. The simulation covered the situation of Latin American people escaping gang-related violence subjected to blindfolded nighttime border crossings in the hands of coyotes and detention by the U.S. border patrol, and Sierra Leone natives fleeing Ebola, who cross the Mediterranean to Italy, then undergo incessant preventive medical and political screening. The class also studied the experiences of Ethiopian Jews in Israel and Syrian refugees at the Turkish border in a reflection on how present day geopolitical demands often conflict with ideological/theoretical ambitions regarding human rights.

Students Take Early Global Trip Across the Border
Last week, several Pacific Ridge students dedicated their spring vacation to practicing Spanish, learning about Tijuana and meeting a multitude of new people. Students spent time with Mexican High School students, worked two mornings in a children's center, visited a migrant shelter, met with a business leader and factory workers, played soccer on the beach and ate wonderful Mexican food. Some students lodged with a local family while others stayed with a large group of students from Instituto Mexico. Feliz primavera!

Boys Lacrosse Winning Streak Continues in San Francisco
During Spring Break, the Boys Varsity Lacrosse team traveled north for a week of team bonding and fierce competition in San Francisco. The Firebirds came away with two impressive wins against top-ranked California teams - San Francisco University High School (16-9) and Bellarmine College Prep High School (7-5). According to Coach Collins, the Bellarmine game was one of the most memorable in program history. A stout defense held the score to 5-5 at the end of the third quarter, while in the fourth quarter a combination of spectacular offense and phenomenal saves by goalie Reed Levesque clinched the win. Coach VanSant attributed the victory to the team's resilience and unity. Following a six-game winning streak, the Firebirds have shown that they are elite competitors. Pacific Ridge is currently ranked first in San Diego, third in the state, and sixth out of the nearly 600 high school programs on the west coast.
