Students Showcase Spoken Word Poetry
During last Wednesday's Community Life, students were treated to a showcase by the Spoken Word Poetry Club. Individual student performances were interspersed with short video clips providing a history of the art form. Students Claire St. Marie '16, Sarah Burris '16, Sarah Tatsumi '16, Khalid Abudawas '16, Juliana Fan '16, Lily Klinek '17, Sarah Bahadori '18 and Hannah Maerowitz '17 impressed with their courage and wit in sharing hopes, fears and beliefs through lyrical verse.

Students Inspired by Cancer for College's Craig Pollard
At last week's Community Life, 7th graders learned about life after cancer and the use of prosthetic limbs from Pacific Ridge parent Craig Pollard. Mr. Pollard, who started the successful non-profit Cancer for College after two bouts with the disease, spoke with candor and humor about his very active life lived on two prosthetic feet. His visit coincided with 7th-graders' examination of prosthetics in Life Science (see article below). Cancer for College works to help those individuals whose lives have been adversely affected by cancer to realize their dream of a college education.

Mr. Pollard describes current and future prosthetics technology.

A Great Spring Kickoff
Students kicked off the official start of Spring on Friday with a celebration as colorful and joyful as the season itself. Students faced off in inflatable sumo suits, got clingy at the velcro wall, defied gravity in the bounce house, and caused a 'racket' at the badminton nets. Freshly grilled BBQ and a s'mores station provided plenty of fuel for the fun, and a performance by the Pacific Ridge Improv club brought laughs to all.

Technique and Talent Abound at Dance Concert
On March 19th, Pacific Ridge dance students showcased their skill during an evening concert. Despite having just three weeks of practice, 7th-grade dancers performed an impressive jazz number, and 8th-grade dance students put together a creative, musical-theatre interpretation of "Bohemian Rhapsody." Dance 1 students demonstrated their progress in technique with a contemporary routine to "Hanging On" and a crowd-pleasing take on "Smooth Criminal." Dance 2 performed a contemporary piece choreographed by sophomore Sophia Stremel in addition to a musical theatre-style performance of "Sweet Georgia Brown." Eighth graders Anna Stremel and Sophia DeLange showcased a contemporary duet and Upper School service learning group 'On Pointe' took the stage as well.

Curricular Adventures

Life Science Students Complete 'Hands-On' Assignment

Seventh-grade Life Science students finished a unit on bones, muscles and skin with a "hands-on" assignment. The students were tasked with creating a prosthetic hand prototype that is able to grab, lift and release. The class first worked on model hands made of silicone and powered by string, then students set off to create designs of their own. The use of recycled materials was encouraged and a $20 spending limit was set, but construction and mechanics were limited only by students' imaginations. The finished products, made of everything from cardboard to Lego parts, were tested by their ability to successfully grasp a tennis ball.

Get a grip: Students learn about the mechanics of the human hand.

Art Appreciation in the City of Angels

The AP Art History and AP/Advanced Photo classes visited the Los Angeles County Museum of Art on Friday, March 20th. Photo students explored the Larry Sultan retrospective, where they viewed more than 200 of Sultan's photographs documenting themes of family, home and façade. Art History students enjoyed seeing famous works such as Andy Warhol's Campbell's Soup Cans and The Magdalen with the Smoking Flame by Georges de la Tour. The group rounded out its day with a food truck lunch break, a visit to a large section of the Berlin Wall at the Wende Museum and a walk through the Rodin sculpture garden.

famous "Urban Lights" exhibit.

Entrepreneurship Students Learn the Art of the Pitch

It's not often that teenage entrepreneurs have the opportunity to sit down with an experienced venture capitalist, but on March 20th, students in the Pacific Ridge Holistic Entrepreneurship class got to do just that. Students pitched their business ideas to Eugene Chen (father of Tyler '15 and Eric '18) and received valuable feedback on the validity of their concepts, quality of their presentations and effectiveness of their execution plans. Mr. Chen, a general and founding partner at Medenovo, LLC, an investment firm focused on medical devices, also shared valuable knowledge about the benefits and challenges of entrepreneurship, how to put together a high-functioning team and the importance of adaptability.

Mr. Venkatesh Awarded 'Frontier of Innovation' Grant

Congratulations to Pacific Ridge Computer Science teacher Jug Venkatesh, who was recently awarded a Frontiers of Innovation Scholars Program Grant from the UCSD Department of Computer Science and Engineering, where he is a Ph.D. student. The grant will be used to further develop MetaSense, a transportable, air quality monitoring system that allows citizens to detect, record, and share granular air quality information. That information can then be shared with the public to help identify air pollution "hot spots" or warn users with respiratory issues about poor air quality around them.
