Student Entrepreneurship Is Open For Business

From lemonade to logistics, student entrepreneurs are hard at work finding lucrative solutions to the Pacific Ridge community's needs. The 17 students enrolled in this year's new Entrepreneurship elective, co-taught by Mr. El Alam and Ms. Schmidt, selected three business models to pursue. "The App Group" hopes to design an application to streamline all Pacific Ridge events into one, user-friendly schedule, "Quench" seeks to establish a permanent, on-campus beverage stand, and "Firebird Feed" plans to serve as an intermediary connecting students with local eateries for lunch. The groups are currently writing business plans, beta testing, and fundraising for their ventures. Upon completion of the various projects, the class will discuss future modifications, scalability, and sustainability of their pursuits.

Patrick Henry Visits Pacific Ridge
On Tuesday, February 24th, middle school students enjoyed a unique Community Life when founding father Patrick Henry came by for a visit. A representative of Colonial Williamsburg, where 8th graders will visit during their global travel program in June, Mr. Henry spoke to students about his role in the American Revolution and his belief in self-governance, best summarized by his famous words "Give me liberty or give me death!" Mr. Henry also engaged with students in American History classes throughout the day.

7th Graders Get Eyewitness View of Justice System
On Tuesday, February 24th, 7th graders visited the Vista Courthouse to observe the justice system at work. Students spoke to Superior Court Judge Harry M. Elias and several prosecutors and public defenders before watching a prospective juror video and visiting courtrooms to observe trials in progress. The courthouse visit touches on students' current reading of To Kill a Mockingbird in English class, as well as their examination of the Civil Rights movement in Social and Community Studies. Thanks to parents Sherry and Bill Stone for organizing this informative trip.

Middle School Students Caught 'Acting Out'
Students in Mrs. Brady's Spanish B class celebrated the completion of their second trimester Spanish language novel,

El Viaje de su Vida, by acting out the final scene of the book en espaņol. The story follows 16-year-old Carlos Ayala on a cruise with his family from the U.S. to Yucatan, where he is the only witness to the theft of an object of great value. Students enjoyed testing their vocabulary with a spirited and goofy interpretation of the mystery's dramatic final act.

Freshman Runs Hockey League for Special Needs Youth

Last week, Isaiah Granet '18 made local and national headlines for his work founding and managing The Chill, a hockey league for developmentally disabled youth. The league, which Isaiah created two years ago as a bar mitzvah charity project, currently boasts 30 players and a near equal number of dedicated volunteers. Isaiah found a law firm to help register The Chill as a 501(C)(3), successfully applied for a grant from USA Hockey, and negotiated for ice time. During the season, September through May, The Chill meets weekly at UTC Ice for lessons, drills, and intra-squad scrimmages. Isaiah plans to continue running the league as an Independent Service Learning Project.
