Middle School Social Event on January 23rd
Middle School students are invited to join classmates for an evening of Capture The Flag in the new Middle School Building. Snacks will be provided. There is no fee for this event.

Winter Formal: It's Alice in Wonderland!
Upper School students are invited to fall down the rabbit hole for this year's 'Alice in Wonderland'- themed winter formal. Great music, snacks and refreshments will be offered.

Summer Programs Information Fair on January 29th

"Rumble on the Ridge" on January 30th
Help pack the bleachers and cheer loud enough to cause a "Rumble on the Ridge" in support of Girls Varsity Soccer, Boys JV Basketball, and Girls and Boys Varsity Basketball on January 30th! The Red Oven Pizza food truck will be on hand, providing fans with fuel to keep cheering all night! Club Firebird will sell Firebird headbands and t-shirts the week before the event.

Pippin Seeking Video Cameras and Props!
The Pippin production team is seeking to borrow three video cameras with HDMI input/output capability from January 31st to February 7th for important use in the Pippin show. Pacific Ridge Now Hosting San Diego Children's Choir
Pacific Ridge School has been selected as a 2015 rehearsal site for the San Diego Children's Choir. The partnership will enable more families in San Diego's North County to participate in the San Diego Children's Choir's exceptional choral education and performance programs. SDCC has choirs for grades 1-2, 3-5, 6-9, and 10-12. Choral participants perform with the San Diego Symphony, California Ballet, and more. For information, visit the SDCC website.
Tax Receipts on Their Way: Thank You for Your Support!
Tax receipts, which summarize each family's donation(s) to Pacific Ridge School during the 2014 calendar year, will be sent in the U.S. mail by January 30th. Benjamin Zander to Speak and Perform at Pacific Ridge
On Tuesday evening, March 10th, the Pacific Ridge community will welcome Benjamin Zander to our Carlsbad campus. Mr. Zander, founder and conductor of the Boston Philharmonic, is known around the world as a charismatic conductor and an inspirational speaker on leadership, combining both in his radiant performances. Using music as a vehicle, he helps participants see the world in new and transformative ways. This event is not a speech - it's an experience. Model U.N. Team Impresses at Columbia University Conference
Congratulations to Pacific Ridge Model United Nations team members who traveled to New York to compete at the Columbia University Model U.N. Conference on January 15th to 18th. Facing delegations from some of the finest schools in the country, our students performed with distinction in simulations as wide-ranging as the Chinese Military Commission, the Cyprus Dispute Committee, and the International Trade in Endangered Species Committee. Exemplary work did not go unnoticed: Nick Marr and Avery Rogers received Outstanding Delegate awards, Elle Lefebvre, Julien Barthelemy, and Matty Bernstein received Honorable Mention Awards, and Josh Kahn and Tony Oliverio received Verbal Commendations.

The varsity, JV and freshman Academic League teams celebrated victory on January 15th, after their win over El Camino High School. The varsity team dominated 86-9, while the JV team earned an impressive 78-22 win and the freshman team prevailed 33-22. Congratulations, Firebirds!

Middle School Students Spell It Out The new Middle School Town Square was buzzing with activity during last week's "spelling bee"-themed Community Life. Students worked in teams to spell words such as "ukulele" and "flamb�" as quickly as possible. Winners of the practice rounds received a candy prize, but starting next week, spelling bee winners will win something even sweeter - the chance to represent Pacific Ridge in regional bees and beyond. Students can access practice quizzes, vocabulary flashcards and important spelling bee dates on the Middle School Spelling Bee page on Haiku.

Seniors Dine With Chilean Author at Literary Luncheon
On January 15th, a group of seniors attended the annual Rancho Santa Fe Literary Society luncheon to meet Hector Tobar, author of Deep, Dark, Down: The Untold Stories of 33 Men Buried in a Chilean Mine and the Miracle That Set Them Free. The students spent nearly an hour with Mr. Tobar, discussing his experiences with the Chilean culture and his journalistic approach to storytelling. According to Ms. Juskaitis, the students beautifully represented Pacific Ridge's commitment to engaged learning by conducting themselves with poise, insightfulness, and enthusiastic interest.

Grassroot 3 v. 3 Soccer Tournament on January 25th
Upper School service learning group "Playing 4 A Difference" will host its 3rd annual 3 v. 3 soccer tournament on January 25th. The tournament is open to all Pacific Ridge students and community members 18 and under. Individuals may register with a team of up to five players or as a "free agent" to be placed on a team. F unds raised from the tournament will be used to support Grassroot Soccer, an international nonprofit that uses the power of soccer to save lives by preventing the spread of HIV. Amira Parker '18 Serves as Theater Mentor for Special Needs Peers
Freshman Amira Parker was recently featured in the Seaside Courier for her volunteer work with Encinitas' Positive Action Community Theatre (PACT). PACT provides theater and performing arts workshops that teach self-esteem, cooperation, fitness and creativity to children, teens, and young adults with autism and other unique needs. Amira is a familiar face to those who attend PACT's Saturday workshops. She leads by example, encouraging the group to participate in creative expression work such as music and improvisation.
