Curricular Adventures

Life Science Lesson: How Our Skin Keeps Us Healthy
Seventh-grade students in Ms. Frumovitz's and Mrs. Green's Life Science classes are learning about our body's first line of defense against illness and injury: the skin. To show the importance of this protective organ, students are observing how the skin of an apple is affected when exposed to decay in a number of different situations. The healthier and stronger the skin, the fewer opportunities pathogens will have to invade the fruit. Watching what happens when the skin's protective layer is compromised also teaches students the importance of cleaning and bandaging their own cuts and scrapes.

An Apple a Day: Learning about one of our body's most important organs

Sports Force Asks Athletes to "Compete For A Cause"

Members of Sports Force, a new upper school service-learning group, hope to combine their passion for sports and service by hosting athletic events to benefit local non-profits. The group's first event, a boys lacrosse tournament dubbed the Carlsbad Classic, was held on campus during winter break. More than 100 boys, from elementary school students to college players, competed. Student leaders Alderik Van der Heyde, Borhan Rafiq and Andrew Poole were thrilled with the turnout. All tournament proceeds, totaling more than $2,000, were donated to the San Diego Autism Research Institute.

Alumni News

First College Grad in Alumni Ranks!
Congratulations are due to Daniel Peterschmidt '11, who in December became Pacific Ridge's first alumnus to graduate from college. Daniel, who attended the University of Puget Sound, managed the early graduation while majoring in Chinese with a Computer Science minor, playing the clarinet in the school's wind ensemble, serving as cinematographer and editor for a full-length student film, working as a freelance photographer and spending a semester studying at Donghai University in Taizhong, Taiwan. Daniel notes that Pacific Ridge's passionate teachers and integrated curriculum inspired him to seek out opportunities to collaborate with similarly passionate people in college. He is launching his post-college career as a product development intern at National Public Radio (NPR), where he will focus on digital media.
