Pacific Ridge Honors Founding Athletic Director

On December 5th, founding Athletic Director Darren Lawlor was honored for his service to Pacific Ridge. Coach Lawlor, who retired from his position last spring, helped build Pacific Ridge's athletics program from the ground up and developed it into a robust program that boasts 25 competitive teams, a state-of-the art athletic facility, a roster of experienced coaches and staff, and comprehensive physical education and strength and conditioning programs. Thanks to a generous donation from Scotty and Kathy Cameron P'14, the Athletic Center viewing deck overlooking the field has been named in Coach Lawlor's honor.

Pacific Ridge Hosts Robotics Tournament

On December 7th, Pacific Ridge hosted a FIRST Robotics qualifying tournament on campus. Seventeen teams from throughout the region led their robots through a variety of pre-programmed and driver-controlled skills related to this year's theme, Cascade Effects. Members of the Pacific Ridge Upper School Robotics teams helped to inspect robots, checked software, served as referees and resetters during matches, and ran a "pit crew" to ensure all teams remained on schedule. Seniors Margaret Zhou and Cosmo Cothran-Bray served as emcees, providing commentary on the action and keeping the audience engaged. Thanks to all who volunteered to make the event a success!

Students Attend Conference on Diversity

Last week, seven Pacific Ridge students and five faculty members traveled to the Student Diversity Leadership Conference in Washington, DC. The conference, sponsored by the National Association of Independent Schools, is a gathering for upper school student leaders to examine issues of diversity on high school campuses. The information gathered from presentations and workshops will help on-campus groups such as the Student Inclusivity Club and the Diversity, Inclusivity, Multiculturalism and Equity (DIME) group raise awareness about diversity in the Pacific Ridge community.

Humanizing War: The Experience of Soldiers & Civilians

Haider Hamza, an Iraqi journalist, activist and scholar, spoke about healing the wounds of oppression through peace and reconciliation during last week's Community Life. Hamza has unique insight into the devastation of war, having both lived through it as a resident of Baghdad during the 2003 U.S. invasion, and observed it through jobs with the Iraqi Ministry of Information and as a reporter for some of the world's largest news agencies. Hamza, who has been arrested, shot at, and held captive in the course of his journalistic pursuits, shared poignant visuals of daily life in Iraq following the US-led invasion, the challenges US troops face, his personal struggle, and the high cost of war.
