9th-Grade Students Visit Thai Buddhist Temple

Last week, 9th-grade students had the opportunity to visit the Escondido Wat Thai Buddhist Temple. A gracious group of monks spent the entire day giving brief sermons, demonstrating Thai music, chanting old Pali blessings, and leading the students in meditation practice. The trip served as a fitting conclusion to a World Religions unit in Ancient World History class. Spending time at the temple gave students a better idea of some of the concepts studied in relation to India and China (Nirvana, Karma, Samsara). Buddhism is prevalent in both cultures, and the visit allowed students to explore the concept of space, respect, and behavior in a culture that may be very different from their own.

Curricular Adventures

French Students Imagine Their Ville Idéale

Rome may not have been built in a day, but last week, students in Mr. Stella's French 3 class managed to create four "ideal cities" in just 40 minutes. Students worked in groups to conceptualize a city and create a visual representation. They then demonstrated their impressive French vocabulary while presenting everything from the city's proposed government and economy to what the "citadins" do to entertain themselves. Explaining a moon colony, dictatorship or agricultural-based economy where citizens teleport for fun, en français, is no easy task. Bravo, students!

Service Learning In The Field

Middle School Service Learning Goes to the Dogs

Recently, Middle School students enjoyed visits from the four-legged ambassadors of two, local non-profit organizations. Pit Bull Rescue San Diego, a volunteer network that helps educate the public about the misunderstood breed, stopped by to teach students about the history of the pit bull, current pit bull myths in the media, and the challenges of teaching responsible pet ownership. Students were also visited by a group of volunteers and puppies-in-training from New Leash On Life, an organization that provides support and advice for those raising future guide dogs for the blind. Students learned about the process of training guide dogs and heard from a vision-impaired volunteer about the ways his dog helps him to live a normal and fulfilling life.

Boys Varsity Basketball Enjoys International Competition
On Friday, November 28th, the Pacific Ridge Boys Varsity Basketball team traveled across the border to play an international friendly with CETYS (Centro de Enseñanza Técnica y Superior), a high school and University in Tijuana. The Firebirds had to quickly adapt to FIBA International Basketball Rules and contend with a quick CETYS team, but were able to come away with a 10 point win and valuable pre-season experience. After the game, CETYS treated Pacific Ridge players and coaches to a delicious meal. Over carne asada tacos the boys practiced language skills, talked basketball, and made new friends. The  team looks forward to hosting CETYS at Pacific Ridge next year.
