The Transformative Power of Forgiveness

Internationally renowned speaker and award-winning author Azim Khamisa shared his incredible story of forgiveness with faculty and staff during last week's Community Life. In 1995, Khamisa's only son Tariq was delivering pizzas when he was senselessly murdered at the hands of Tony Hicks, a 14-year-old gang member. Believing that there were "victims at both ends of the gun," Khamisa established the Tariq Khamisa Foundation to break the cycle of youth violence. He also invited Ples Felix, Hicks' grandfather, to join him at the foundation. Together, the men travel the country delivering their powerful testimonials of forgiveness and non-violence. Khamisa is also working to secure an early release from prison for Hicks.

Photography Students Explore the Art of Thinking Big

Last week, students in Advanced and AP Photography explored more than 20,000 square feet of modern art while visiting local artist Santos Orellana's pop-up gallery in a sprawling Carlsbad warehouse. Santos uses his colorful art-making process to discover hidden aspects of his own experiences, which include growing up in Honduras, emigrating to New York, and working as a chemist. Students learned about the contemporary art world as well as the importance of taking risks and pursuing creative passions.

Santos Orellana discusses his large-scale paintings and sculptures.

Service Learning In The Field

9th Graders Glimpse Behind The Scenes of a Non-Profit

During last week's Service Learning period, 9th graders heard from Educational Enrichment Systems (EES) Chief Operational Officer Celine Krimston and Chief Financial Officer David Fuhriman. EES, a new partner to the Pacific Ridge service learning program, is a non-profit child development agency providing early education programs to low-income families in San Diego County. Krimston and Fuhriman spoke about the organization's day-to-day and long term needs and offered ways for young people to help. As part of the service-learning curriculum, 9th graders are asked to learn about an organization, identify a specific problem, and then design and implement a solution to that problem. The presentation served as jumping off point for students to brainstorm ways to raise funds and awareness for EES.
