Bringing Shakespeare's Words to Life

Barry Edelstein, Artistic Director of San Diego's Old Globe Theatre, taught Upper School students how to think Like Shakespearean actors during last week's Community Life. Edelstein demonstrated the performer's approach to discerning the meaning behind Shakespeare's sometimes intimidating language. Using examples from literature, pop culture, and his extensive experience coaching actors, Edelstein revealed how actors tackle the poetry of the Bard by taking it one line at a time, savoring Shakespeare's powerful use of verbs, noticing his use of contrasts and considering why characters use the kinds of words they do. Students left the presentation with the tools to be better consumers, critics and performers of Shakespeare's work.

Field Day Inspires Firebird Spirit

On Friday, October 25th, Pacific Ridge's 8th annual Field Day had the campus buzzing with competition, fun, and Firebird spirit! Teams spent the afternoon rotating through stations including a three-legged race, giant jump rope, beach volleyball, and human tic-tac-toe. The final tally revealed a tie between Team Black and Team Blue, resulting in a tie-breaking tug o' war between seniors of the opposing teams. Team Blue emerged victorious and hoisted the coveted Field Day trophy overhead for the fourth consecutive year! For more Field Day photos, please visit the Pacific Ridge Facebook page.

Conversations in Ethics
Last week, students in Mr. DeCrop's Ethics in Society, Policy and Law class were joined by Pacific Ridge parents Nicolas Barthelemy and Julie Ames for a fascinating discussion about moral concerns in the field of bioethics. Mr. Barthelemy, CEO of bioTheranostics, and Mrs. Ames, President of The Cambridge Group, gave students real world examples and insights into topics such as stem cell research, DNA sequencing, clinical trials and federal regulations. Discoursing with field experts who grapple with such issues every day enhanced the students' examination of moral issues and the consequences of decisions in the field of medical ethics.

Service Learning In The Field

Seniors Ship "Seeds of Sight" to Cambodia

This month, seniors Zoe Siddall and Megan Chang-Haines shipped more than 30,000 kale seeds to primary schools in Cambodia as part of their independent service learning project, Seeds for Sight. Seeds for Sight, which began two years ago as a 10th-Grade Seed Grant project, aims to help end preventable childhood blindness (often caused by Vitamin A deficiency) by equipping rural Cambodian communities with the knowledge and tools to grow nutrient-dense kale in community gardens. With the help of the Trailblazer Foundation, Zoe and Megan developed the program, selected and shipped kale seeds, funded the purchase of fertilizer, gardening supplies and a compost bin. They also created an educational pamphlet with illustrations on gardening and nutrition.

Students Trace Their Environmental Impact

This week, Middle School students in the Sustainability and Recycling Service Learning group visited the Carlsbad transfer station run by Waste Management. Students learned about the process of collecting, transporting, and sorting community trash and recyclable materials. Throughout the trimester, students handle on-campus recycling and composting, energy and footprint monitoring, and discuss issues related to Environmental Science. Through their work, the students provide an important service to the school and learn about the best ways that we can care for our campus and surroundings.
