Each week, Pacific Ridge School invites you to enjoy a spontaneous view of school life. 

 

Making our mark! Students, faculty and parents add their names and celebratory messages to the new Arts Center's walls. Construction of the Arts Center and Middle School building is rapidly progressing. Completion of the two facilities is expected by January of 2015.

Health & Athletic Forms for 2014-2015 Available Online
Parents, please check your email for information regarding Careflow, the school's new electronic medical records and forms system. Careflow will enable parents to fill out the majority of required health and athletic forms online, and download forms that need a physician's signature. Less paper and hassle! Careflow's secure records system can be accessed from your My Backpack account. Please note that all forms for the 2014-2015 school year are due by August 1st.

Try Book Buddies - The Online Textbook Exchange!
The Pacific Ridge Parents Association is pleased to announce its used textbook exchange website. The Book Buddies site is designed to be an online "bulletin board" where sellers can post books for sale and buyers can find books for purchase. This will replace the traditional used textbook sale, saving countless volunteer hours and creating a simpler, more sustainable exchange! Detailed instructions and a link for the site are posted in Haiku on the Parents Association page.



Advanced Theater Arts Production on July 27th!
Students in the Advanced Theater Arts class would like to thank the Pacific Ridge community for supporting their efforts to perform at the Fringe Festival in August. The Scotland-bound group will be performing a final, polished preview performance at Carlsbad's Dove Library on Sunday July 27th. Miss the April performances of Liz Flahive's From Up Here? Want to wish the troupe bon voyage? Reserve your seats for this special mid-summer performance by emailing bagpipesorbust@pacificridge.org.

Join Pacific Ridge at The Old Globe on August 23rd! 

For the 5th year in a row, Pacific Ridge families are invited to come together for a summer evening at Balboa Park's beautiful Old Globe Theatre. This year's selected performance is Shakespeare's Two Gentlemen of Verona, a fast-paced, exuberant tale of friendship, romance and secret identities. A link for ticket sales, complete with a promotional code for Pacific Ridge families, is coming soon. Save the date of August 23rd at 8:00 p.m., and check your email for more information about this popular end-of-summer outing.

 

Summer Programs and Sports Camps at Pacific Ridge!

From June 23rd to August 1st, Pacific Ridge will be offering a number of summer programs available to all students in San Diego's North County. Choices include both for-credit and non-credit classes for middle and high school students, the Firebird Program for rising 5th through 7th graders, and numerous sports camps. Ready for High School? Check Out Our Freshman Seminar

Pacific Ridge's academic summer programs include a number of courses for students in Math and World Languages. In addition, incoming 9th graders can take a one-week Freshman Seminar in either late July or early August. The class will introduce new students to concepts such as Harkness, and help them enhance work habits and skills that will lead to success in Pacific Ridge's Upper School. While the class is geared toward new students, returning students may benefit as well. For details, click here.

 

Host International Students For A Summer's Day 

AFS San Diego, a non-profit exchange organization, is looking for Pacific Ridge families willing to open their homes to two international students during Host Days on July 27th and August 3rd. Host Days provide an opportunity for students from Asia, Europe, and South America who are participating in a language and culture program at UCSD to spend time with people in the community and engage in local summer activities such as hiking, going to the beach, or enjoying a backyard barbecue. Eighth Graders Celebrate Promotion to High School
The last day of school, Tuesday, June 10th, was marked by an important rite of passage, as 79 eighth graders were promoted to high school. In a formal yet lighthearted ceremony in the Athletic Center, each student was individually recognized and crossed the stage to receive a diploma. Mission Awards were also given to Middle School students who strongly demonstrated different aspects of the Pacific Ridge mission statement. Congratulations to our new Upper School students!

Global Rewind Highlights Year-End Trips

On June 10th, students and families gathered in Mullady Hall for an expo celebrating this year's global travel program. Tables representing each travel destination displayed artifacts collected during the trips, photographic slideshows and printed quotations excerpted from students' reflections on their experiences. Thank you to our students and faculty for participating in the travel program, accepting in equal measure the challenges and joys that travel brings, and for embracing the opportunity to learn more about yourselves, others and the world.

Upper School Awards Given at End-of-Year Ceremony

On the afternoon of June 10th, Upper School students were acknowledged for a number of achievements. National Merit Scholars and Honor Society members were commended, and a number of rising seniors received college book awards sponsored by alumni from colleges and universities around the country. Mission awards were presented to students in grades 9 through 12, and three additional awards honored Seniors who have most embraced Harkness learning, academic integration and service to the school during their time at Pacific Ridge. Congratulations to all Pacific Ridge students for your many accomplishments this school year!

Parents Association Book Club Summer Reads:
This summer's Book Club selections are Flash Boys, by Michael Lewis, and Bad Monkey, by Carl Hiaasen. The Book Club will hold its first meeting of the new school year in late August. Meeting details will confirmed soon. Please email Allison Dinning be added to the Book Club email list.

Pacific Ridge Athletes Named to Union Tribune All-Academic Teams
On June 8th, the San Diego Union-Tribune named its spring 2014 All-Academic teams, which honor juniors and seniors who maintain a GPA of 3.0 or better while participating in a CIF varsity sport. Congratulations, All-Academic Firebirds!

Important Fall Sports Information

Student-Athletes are required to have all online health and athletic forms completed and an updated physical filed online before they are able to participate in fall tryouts. Coach Neptune will attend tryouts to verify that athletes have submitted all required information. Instructions for the online forms system will be announced shortly.

 

Following the CIF-San Diego policy of a school-wide No Contact Period, coaches will be unable to meet with athletes or respond to emails or phone calls from July 21st to August 3rd. 

 

Girls Volleyball

Tryouts for all Upper School Volleyball teams begin August 11th and 12th, from 10:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m. and from 1:00 - 2:30 p.m. Practices will commence on August 13th. Questions? Contact Coach Dahl at adahl@pacificridge.org. 

 

Girls Tennis

Tryouts for Upper School Girls Tennis begin Tuesday, August 12th with a parent meeting at 2:45 p.m., followed by practice at 3:00 p.m. at the Bobby Riggs Tennis Center in Encinitas. Questions? Contact Coach Dawson at  jdawson@pacificridge.org. 

 

Coed Cross Country

Tryouts for Upper School Coed Cross Country begin Tuesday, August 12th from 4:00 p.m. - 5:30 p.m., and will meet in front of the Athletic Center. A parent meeting will be held at Pacific Ridge on August 22nd at 5:30 p.m. Questions? Contact Coach Edwards at sedwards@pacificridge.org.

 

Middle School Fall Sports Information

Middle School sports programs will begin on the first day of school, Wednesday, August 27th. Student-Athletes will need to have all online forms completed and an updated physical on file before participating.
