8th Graders Explore Ecosystems, Artifacts at Natural History Museum

On Tuesday, May 27th, Pacific Ridge eighth graders were treated to a day of exploration at the San Diego Natural History Museum. The visit was a fun kickoff to a busy week of Williamsburg travel preparations. While at the museum, students enjoyed a viewing of Ocean Oasis, an award-winning film that captures the contrast and connection between Mexico's Sea of Cortes and the Baja California desert. Students also had the opportunity to view the Real Pirates exhibition, a limited-engagement exhibition that includes more than 200 artifacts recovered off the coast of Cape Cod from the first authenticated pirate ship discovered in U.S. waters.

Pacific Ridge School To Host Hands of Peace

This summer, Pacific Ridge School will host 25 Israeli, Palestinian, and American teenagers for Hands of Peace, an 18-day dialogue and coexistence program. Hands of Peace, which will run from July 6th - 24th, focuses on developing peace-building and leadership skills through the power of dialogue and personal relationships. Participants, including several Pacific Ridge students, will be able to learn about multiple sides of the Middle East conflict through face-to-face conversation. History teacher and longtime Hands of Peace facilitator Scott Silk is excited to bring this "transformational" program to San Diego. For more information about how you can get involved with the Hands of Peace program, please contact Mr. Silk at ssilk@handsofpeace.org.

Students in Hands of Peace Recognized for Social Entrepreneurship

Students Khalid Abudawas '16, Joshua Kahn '16, and Alyssa Martindale '17 were named finalists in the 2014 Social Innovation Relay. The competition, sponsored by Junior Achievement and Hewlett Packard, asks teenagers to identify a societal problem the world faces and develop an entrepreneurial solution. Khalid, Josh and Alyssa created a proposal based on their involvement with the Hands of Peace service learning group, which is helping to bring the Hands of Peace program to San Diego and Pacific Ridge School. Their concept paper and presentation placed them among the top three of more than 50 San Diego area teams. Congratulations!
