Sophomores Plant A Seed for the Common Good

In February, 10th graders were asked to research universal values and local and global communities in need. Individually and in small groups, students devised sustainable solutions for a selected community and need, and pitched their ideas to the entire class. From the more than 20 ideas generated, five were selected for further development. All students then joined these five social action projects, collaborating in roles including project management, research, engineering, documentation, graphic design and marketing. On Wednesday, April 30th, teams of students from each project presented to the school community and a panel of outside judges. The winning project, "Nap Aid," received a grant of $1500 to help it become a reality. Congratulations to all the public-spirited entrepreneurs in the sophomore class who worked on the following projects:

Nap Aid: Developing a portable sleep system for the homeless

Selva: Saving a Panamanian rainforest through clothing sales

Graffiti for Good: Giving young graffiti artists a legal canvas for their art

Here Hear: Raising money to assist hearing-impaired youth through sales of music headphones

Ground Up: Supporting small Guatemalan coffee farms by partnering with local coffee shops

Sophomores describe their social action initiatives.

New Programs for 2014-2015!

Students are eagerly anticipating several new course offerings currently under development for next year's Special Studies program. "Entrepreneurship and Innovation" will focus on business and design challenges that can be implemented in the Pacific Ridge community in a single trimester. "The Holistic Entrepreneur," a year-long course under consideration, focuses on developing ideas into products or services that might have life outside of the school year and the school community. Click here for details about these exciting, potential junior and senior electives.

Enrollment Parties Celebrate New Students & Families

On May 2nd and 3rd, Pacific Ridge hosted enrollment celebrations for students and families who will be joining our community in the fall. Parents, students and siblings had a chance to meet, socialize and learn more about the school. We warmly encourage all new families to participate in the various orientations, social events and other activities that will take place starting in the late summer.

Welcome to Pacific Ridge!

Introduction to Theater Arts Class Takes the Stage

The Introduction to Theater Arts class presented an evening of selected scenes on Friday, May 2nd. Congratulations to Pacific Ridge's thespians for a job well done!

Freshmen and Sophomores Prepare for Trips

With just two weeks left until the 9th-grade class departs for China, trip preparations are in full swing. During this week's Magic Monday period, students received a basic Mandarin language lesson from Mrs. Chu, then broke into groups and created skits demonstrating various aspects of travel etiquette. Topics included the dos and don'ts of behavior on international flights, at hotels, and during homestays, as well as how to manage travel gear and respectfully handle cross-cultural encounters. Meanwhile, sophomores have been getting fit, sharing tips on camping equipment and building iTunes song libraries to play on the drive to Yosemite. Global travel, here we come!

9th graders demonstrate how to be a polite homestay guest.

As part of their application, candidates must undertake a group project that will positively impact their community. Global Vantage is providing funds to help candidates complete projects such as the creation of a village park and community center. For details, please click here. Subscriptions to Global Vantage can be ordered online.

BESTOW Lends a Hand to Local Foster Teens

On April 26th, members of independent service learning group BESTOW were happy to "dig in" at San Pasqual Academy - a residential education campus for foster teens located in Escondido. The group helped prepare soil, plant, weed, and mulch a new garden on the school's campus. The garden will be used for an elective class designed to teach students about organic farming. The garden's produce will be used in school culinary classes and sold at local farmers markets. The morning of hard work was celebrated with a BBQ lunch enjoyed with San Pasqual students and all of the day's volunteers.
