Creativity Blooms at Spring Arts Festival
On Friday, April 25th, students and families enjoyed an afternoon celebrating the arts at Pacific Ridge. The campus served as stage, studio and canvas for attendees who witnessed amazing performance art and had the opportunity to create some art of their own. Students and visitors were wowed by performances by A Cappella, theatre, improv, dance, musical groups and more. For those looking for a hands-on art experience, a pottery wheel, dance master class, chalk and string art murals, and henna art station were among the many interactive activities. This year's event also included STEAM-related projects such as building mini theremin and strandbeests, making liquid nitrogen ice cream, and examining the winning 8th-grade Rube Goldberg projects. Thanks go to the arts faculty for their hard work organizing the day's events. For more pictures, please visit Pacific Ridge's Facebook page.
Audiences Enjoy the View From Up Here
On April 24th and 25th, Pacific Ridge School audiences were treated to a production soon to grace the stages of Edinburgh's Fringe Festival. The Advanced Theater Arts and Directing class has been invited to perform at the world-renowned theater festival this summer, and chose to debut its selection, From Up Here, as the second annual Pacific Ridge Spring Play. Attendees were captivated by the students' portrayal of a family struggling to regain a sense of normalcy after a disturbing incident. Creative and simple staging allowed the multilayered characters to shine, and the cast handled the play's emotional tone and sensitive subject matter with aplomb. The result was an often poignant, sometimes humorous look at choices, consequences and the resilience of family. Congratulations to Ms. Trattner, the cast and crew on a thoughtful production that is sure to impress in Scotland!

Cirque du Prom
Juniors and Seniors who attended Saturday's Cirque-themed Prom were treated to a spectacular evening "under the big top." A red tulle and twinkle-lit path led to the dance entrance, where attendees were met by high energy music and glittering red and gold decor. Performers from Flip Force San Diego dazzled the crowd with aerial acts on silks and rings, DJ Snipez from Musically Yours DJs kept the dance floor packed all night, candy and snacks were plentiful, and an outdoor patio behind the tent proved perfect for enjoying the lovely spring evening.

Juniors Profile Local Leaders
For the past four months, members of the Class of 2015 have worked on integrated research projects about the sources and characteristics of leadership. As part of the project, students interviewed leaders in the local community with whom they share an interest or passion. The interviews covered a range of topics, including the interviewee's path to their current position, the skills and experiences they incorporate into their work, and leadership lessons they have learned. On April 23rd, juniors whose projects were selected by their advisors for outstanding quality presented excerpts from interviews with leaders in business, medicine, politics, science, sports and more.

8th-Grade Students Take Physics on the Road
On April 24th, Pacific Ridge 8th graders headed to K-1 Speed in Carlsbad to participate in the second annual "Firebirds Grand Prix of Physics." Professional race car driver Patricio Jourdain, who has competed in Formula 1, NASCAR and stock car races, introduced the event by giving students physics-based driving tips. Then, it was off to the races, as students put physics into practice on K-1's 14-lap track. The best racers from each of 7 heats competed in a final race. The results? Students Bryce Snodgrass, Nadia Abudawas and Matt O'Donnell nabbed first through third place. As a follow-up assignment, students were asked to solve a series of problems involving the physics they experienced while racing.

Middle Schoolers Bring Spring to Robertson Ranch
Pacific Ridge students in the Middle School Sustainability service learning group have been working for six years at Carlsbad's Robertson Ranch Habitat Conservation Area under the supervision of the Center for Natural Lands Management. In the fall, 7th and 8th graders helped prepare a hillside for a reintroduction of native species. This spring, they have been busily planting hundreds of new seedlings on the ridge. While contributing their labor to the project, students are learning about conservation values and the specific challenges facing San Diego's sensitive native habitat.
Alternative Energy Sources Helps Fuel Arts Festival, Prom
Though they weren't seen on stage, students in Upper School service learning group Alternative Energy Sources (AES) played a crucial role in many Arts Festival performances. AES was responsible for fueling the generator that powered the festival's outdoor stage. The generator ran on biodiesel that the students created themselves by reacting canola, peanut, or corn oil with common chemicals. The process also involved synthesizing, cleaning, and testing the renewable, clean-burning resource for usability. Bio-diesel produced by AES also provided a significant amount of power to this year's Prom.
