On the Wall: Seventh Graders Experience Border
On Tuesday, April 15th, 7th-grade students visited Friendship Park near the Mexican-American border to learn more about the complex social and environmental issues of the area. The trip connected to the students' study of borders around the world in SOCCOM and their reflections on ethical questions related to community. Enrique Morones, founder of Border Angels, spoke to students about his organization's efforts to reduce deaths along the border due to extreme weather conditions and racial discrimination crime. At a Community Life following the trip, the class also discussed border-related issues such as drug trafficking, illegal immigration and national security.

Calculus Camp: 24 Hours of Focus, Preparation & Fun!
AP Calculus students spent the night of April 18th on campus attending Pacific Ridge's 5th annual Calculus Camp, a unique program designed by math teacher Amy Wasserman. The overnight session provides an extended period of uninterrupted practice and study for the upcoming Advanced Placement exam and an opportunity for students to think about and discuss the concepts of calculus for an entire day. Students reviewed lessons learned during the year, discussed test-taking strategies and took a full-length AP exam simulation. The hard work was interspersed with games, a movie, lots of good food, and yes -- some sleep. According to Ms. Wasserman, students enjoyed the camaraderie of the camp and emerged confident and prepared for the May exam.
Study by Lamplight: Students prepare for the AP exam. American Literature Students Meet Author Nancy Horan On Tuesday, April 22nd, students attended the Rancho Santa Fe Literary Society's monthly luncheon to hear guest speaker Nancy Horan, author of Under the Wide and Starry Sky. Ms. Horan described the research she undertook to write her book, a work of historical fiction that explores the relationship between Robert Louis Stevenson and his devoted wife, Fanny. After the lecture, students had the opportunity to meet with Ms. Horan to discuss the book and her approach to the writing process.

Second to None Offers Loyal Support to the Marines
Upper School service-learning group Second to None showed its support for the U.S. military by delivering care packages to a platoon of Marines at Camp Pendleton last weekend. The group worked with the Family Readiness Officer for platoon HMLA-369 to determine which items were most needed. The students then shopped for and compiled care packages full of requested items including beef jerky, socks, Cup O' Noodles, and energy drinks. As a gesture of appreciation, the Marines took the students on a tour of the air station where they were able to meet Marines in each department, learn about various aircraft on the base and test out a pair of night vision goggles.

Senior and Alumnus Make Waves with Clothing CompanyFor the past three years, in between homework, school activities and social time, Pacific Ridge al umnus Bryan Benattou '13 and Pacific Ridge senior Chandler Abbey have been running their own company - lifestyle apparel brand Keto Clothing. The name Keto was inspired by a mythological Greek sea goddess of the same name and is a reflection of the boys' passion for the sea and surf. The brand is also committed to sustainability, as inspired by Bryan's experiences in Pacific Ridge's AP Environmental Science class. Bryan, who is currently studying entrepreneurship at Loyola Marymount University, handles the business end of the company, while Chandler puts his creative talents to work in the design and marketing process. Keto Clothing merchandise is currently being sold online and at surf shop Seaworthy in downtown Carlsbad. Bryan and Chandler are also working on a Kickstarter-funded surf film called "Relative Youth," to be completed in the fall.
