Officially Amazing! Pacific Ridge Breaks World Record
On Friday, February 28th, 504 Pacific Ridge students and faculty set a world record for the largest African dance, the "Pata Pata," during groundbreaking festivities for the new Middle School building and Arts Center. The South African dance, taught to most 7th graders as part of their Arts Wheel rotation, was made famous by songstress and anti-Apartheid activist Miriam Makeba. The Pacific Ridge community rehearsed the dance together twice last week in anticipation of the record-breaking attempt. A Guinness World Records® official was on hand to adjudicate the effort and certify the record. Congratulations to all who participated!

French Students Share Joie de Vivre with Pacific Ridge
Between February 19th and March 1st, Pacific Ridge hosted 19 high school students and two teachers from Lycée Victor Duruy in Paris. The French students stayed with Pacific Ridge host families, spent several days attending classes and toured numerous sites around southern California to learn more about the area's culture, history and ecology. In May, a number of Pacific Ridge students will reconnect with their new friends at Lycée Victor Duruy during their global trip to France. A big thank you goes to the Pacific Ridge host families, who went out of their way to make the visiting students feel welcome.

Bienvenue! French friends gather at a potluck welcome dinner.

Curricular Adventures

Music in the Park: Middle School Orchestra Performs
On Saturday, March 1st, Pacific Ridge's Middle School Orchestra participated in the Music in the Parks Festival in Anaheim. Student choral, orchestral and band ensembles participated in the event, which takes place annually at venues across the United States. At the festival, student groups perform in the morning, then spend the afternoon together at an amusement park. Led by Pacific Ridge music teacher Steve Morell, the Middle School students performed varied pieces by Mahler, Pat Metheny and the pop/rock group Fun, then managed to dodge the afternoon's rainstorms while enjoying Disneyland!

French Students Share Perspectives in the Classroom
Pacific Ridge students in French 3 and 4 spent several recent class periods engaging with the visiting students from Lycée Victor Duruy. In French 4, the American and French students conducted personal interviews as part of a cross-cultural study the class is conducting. The students who will be traveling to France on their global trip will continue the research in May with more interviews at Lycée Victor Duruy. In French 3, several informative Harkness sessions were conducted on a topic both timely and relevant to the San Diego and French communities: immigration.
