The WeCare San Diego Consortium will be hosting Internet Safety Specialist Lori Getz for two lectures and discussions on the impact of social media, internet safety, and how to ensure that your children use the internet safely and ethically. More information can be found here.

A Perfect Storm: Honors Theater Performs The Tempest
On Tuesday and Wednesday, February 25th and 26th, students in Ms. Trattner's Honors Theater class performed a special adaptation of Shakespeare's The Tempest at the New Village Arts Theatre in Carlsbad. The production is a part of New Village Arts' award-winning education and outreach program, which also produced Much Ado About Nothing at Pacific Ridge in the summer of 2012. The student actors delved into their roles and ably conveyed the sorcery, romance and humor of the classic story. Thank you to New Village Arts for providing this opportunity to our students.
 
 
 
Thomas Jefferson Visits Campus
On Wednesday, February 26th, Pacific Ridge enjoyed a unique Community Life when the nation's third president, Thomas Jefferson, came by for a visit. A representative of Colonial Williamsburg, where 8th graders will visit during their global travel program in May, Mr. Jefferson spoke to students about the formative effect of his education and how it led him to contribute to the creation of the United States and the writing of the Declaration of Independence. He also engaged with students in American History classes throughout the day.
 
President Jefferson speaks to the importance of freedom of thought and the exchange of ideas. 
 
All in the Family: Sibling Day at Pacific Ridge
On Friday, February 21st, the Yearbook staff hosted Pacific Ridge's annual Sibling Day. Brothers and sisters filled out a fun sibling survey, enjoyed a creative photo station, signed a handmade mural and shared treats at the lunchtime celebration of family.
 
 
Improv Entertains - On the Spot
On Wednesday, February 19th, Pacific Ridge's Improv Club hosted an evening competition in Mullady Hall. Improv group members created two teams - Team eHarmony and Team Match.com - and joined in a spirited battle of wits and laughs. Stay tuned for details about the club's next performance, when they will take on a team of Pacific Ridge faculty members!

Curricular Adventures

Science Olympiad Division C - Job Well Done!
On Saturday, February 22nd, Pacific Ridge's Division C Science Olympiad team represented the school with pride while competing against thousands of students from public and independent schools all over the San Diego area. Thank you to Science Olympiad advisor Jug Venkatesh and to the many parents and faculty members who donated their time and expertise as coaches. The following students earned individual awards:

Dylan McCallum - 16th Place, Water Quality
Max Jorgensen and Soren Schlassa - 19th Place, Entomology
Josh Pollard and Ethan Kuo - 19th Place, Disease Detectives



Poetry Open Mic Night An Evening Full of Stars
On Friday, February 21st, the Spoken Word Poetry Club hosted its first Open Mic night of the year. The East Reading Room was filled with poetry, music and improv, while the Astronomy Club's telescopes provided spectacular views of the night sky. The evening allowed everyone to see the world in a new light and share a bit of themselves with lucky listeners.

Service Learning in the Field

Varsity Basketball Players Give Back to Community
On Saturday, February 22nd, players and coaches and several parents from the Boys Varsity Basketball team spent the evening visiting the La Posada de Guadalupe homeless men's shelter in Carlsbad. The team provided, prepared and served dinner for the 65 men that stay at the shelter. La Posada is the only North County shelter that provides emergency services to both day laborers and the general population. Thanks go to the families who generously donated the food, and to the coaches and players who showed true Firebird spirit through service at the event.

Sports on the Ridge

Two Varsity Teams Win League Titles - All Four Varsity Teams in CIF Playoffs
Congratulations to the Boys Varsity Soccer team and the Girls Varsity Basketball team for clinching their respective league titles. Boys Soccer enjoyed an undefeated league season (8-0-2) and heads to the CIF quarterfinals after defeating Santana High School in the first round of playoffs on February 26th. Girls Basketball also ended the regular season undefeated (7-0-0), and won its first playoff game against High Tech High on February 25th. Boys Basketball's terrific season came to an end on February 26th when the team succumbed to High Tech High in their first-round playoff game. Girls Varsity soccer captured a thrilling first-round playoff win against Fallbrook High School on February 26th.

Come to campus on Friday evening at 7:00 p.m. to cheer on our Girls Varsity Basketball athletes when they take on Liberty Charter. For information on more playoff game dates and locations, please check Schedulestar. Be a Firebird fan!

Two More Firebirds Head to the NCAA!
Congratulations to seniors Marc Hedrick and Katie O'Laughlin, who signed national letters of intent at an NCAA signing celebration at the San Diego Hall of Champions on February 5th. Marc will be attending Princeton University, where he will play golf. Katie will be enrolling at the University of California, San Diego, where she plans to play soccer. Marc and Katie join classmates Sean Gartland and Isabella Salant, who signed their letters of intent in November. Sean plans to swim at Purdue University, while Isabella will play golf at Santa Clara University.



Upper School Winter Sports Celebration on March 12th
Families of Upper School winter sports athletes are invited to the end-of-season Sports Celebration on Wednesday, March 12th. The event will feature a slide show, awards ceremony and breakout sessions for individual team awards and dessert. Dinner will not be served.

Beyond the Ridge

Out-of-State College Fair on March 5th

Families of students in grades 9 to 11 are encouraged to attend this College Counseling-sponsored event on March 5th. Representatives from over 30 public and private colleges from all around the United States will share information about their schools. Students and their families will have an opportunity to browse schools and visit individually with each representative to learn more. Information will also be presented on WUE (Western University Exchange), a regional tuition-reciprocity program that can reduce tuition for students attending college outside of California.

Seniors Take Day Off at Knott's Berry Farm
On Monday, February 24th, members of the senior class spent a day off from school together at Knott's Berry Farm. A wide-open park gave students plenty of time to sample the various rides and enjoy repeat turns on their favorite roller coasters. The event is the first of many special activities planned for the senior class in the coming weeks and months. Graduation, on June 12th, will be here before we know it!

Sophomore Performs at Shakespeare Competition
Claire St. Marie '16 represented Pacific Ridge at the 29th annual San Diego Shakespeare Competition held at the Old Globe Theatre on February 24th. Claire gave strong performances in the afternoon event, competing against winners from 21 area high schools. She delivered a Rosalind's monologue from As You Like It, Act III, Scene ii, and a sonnet with the poise and ability that led her to win the Pacific Ridge competition in January. Congratulations, Claire!
